Honda XR 125L 1st Gear

Having ridden around for a few weeks with no problems engaging 1st gear from neutral at all, in the last few days its become a real pain.

Sometimes it engages with no problem at all, and others (practically every change today) just doesn't go in without either letting the clutch out slightly to let it bite or revving the engine. The gear lever goes down and just doesn't 'get' the gear whereas others it slots into gear perfectly.

I've tried adjusting the clutch with no luck so any ideas what it could be and the solution?

My dad initially thought it was my learner rider error until he tried himself... now i know the XR isn't exactly an engineering masterpiece but surely a problem free change into 1st isn't too much to ask for?

Any thoughts would be appreciated greatly.

you could have a broken pin in you selector drum or a worn/bent selector fork

I've seen this type of problem on Honda cg125's before. If all the other gears are selecting ok & it's not jumping out of any of them then you can probably narrow it down to a worn gear selector shaft where it connects with the selector drum beside the clutch or the selector shaft spring which can wear or get broken.
This problem is most common when selecting 1st gear as it's the most used gear plus a lot inexperienced or young riders tend to be a bit heavy footed when selecting gear anyway. It shouldn't be an expensive fix but if you're handy with the spanners & have a workshop manual then you could do it yourself.
