bought an rs 125 for some summer fun, turning slowly into a summer nightmare,
anyways its a 1998 model with dual air intake on front fairing,
the battery was going flat so i bought, filled, charged and fitted a new batterty into the bike, iam lucky as a friend also has an aprilia 125 to compare against,
when he switches his egnition on it reads 21.6v
whe i swith egnition on i get 12.8
but when he starts and revs to 5000 his reads 14.3v
mine however when started and revd goes down to 11.6
and
down even further when i use lights etc
what can be causing this can anyone help i have 3 kids and very small budget please dont suggest a four stroke??????

You sure he gets 21.6V when he turn his ignition on!!!

I didn't know aprillia made 21V electrical systems!

Assuming you meant 12.6V, if he will let you nick his rec /reg and plug it in your bike then see if it works.

If his makes your bike charge then you know your reg/rec is at fault.

If not the problem is elsewhere so you will need to look at loose connections, generator winding outputs etc etc

hi all just done a voltage check
first off did a regulated check on battery
and no rise in voltage

so

i now do an unregulated check on the magneto/altenator
and all is good its pumping out plenty of juice

so does this mean i have a faulty regulator/rectifier
or is it possible of loose connection or broken wires
just need someone to confirm really.

Was this with your regulator or with your mates?
The reading of a good fully charged new battery will be 13 Volts... not 12V.. So make sure the battery is fully charged as this will affect the test.

So with your mates regulator on your bike rev the bike to 6000 rpm and you should be reading between 13.5-15 Volts DC across the battery. If it's not making atleast 13.5 volts it's maybe the generator windings that have gone on the right side of the engine. To test this disconect the plug to the regulator and rev the bike to 5000 rpm you should be getting a reading of OVER 53 Volts AC , if it's not there's your problem...

Good luck with it!

Unregulated / rectfied it is probably something like 50V ac or higher.

If you have that and nothing at the battery then it is probably the regulator / rectifier unit that has gone.

Battery should be 12.6~12.8V with the ignition turned off, with much below 11 being a battery beyond saving.

All the best

Keith

thanks all for advice all is good now

i tryed my mates regulater and nothing just the same but when i unpluged the regulater i noticed a broken connector inside the connector unit on the bike

so i just bypassed the wire and dada all is good

my batt is now showing 13.1 v and 14.2 v at 6000 revs

sorry for explaination, basically make sure you check all wires and connectors as 1 wire was was broke, i feel so dumb now lol....

but at least i fixed it cheers ne way
