Question for the fabricatiors on here

I want to mark all my tools and i thought about punching my name or my symbol into them.
Would this be wise? Also can i get a punch made up with my symbol and where would i go to have that done?

I just use a centre dot, to mark mine. It does take a while and has the obvious draw back of, how do you mark the punch and hammer lol.

Or you could use a dremmel, with the ingraving bit in it.

The punch idea my work, but my also be a bit costly. Have seen some rather dumb people use the welding equipment on their tools, but it always ends with them fvcked.

I know i've seen welds and the sort thats why i thought of having a punch made, the center punch would be to time consuming.

Cost really isnt an issue as i wouldnt need to replace missing tools.

But i understand where your coming from.

If they are your own personal tools... why not just scratch a mark in a convenient place ? a screw driver should do it

Tools will still go missing if there marked or not, generally its only inbred fucktards that will steal your tools and use them in front of you, most will just take them down to the pub or to their mates and flog them.

If you are really that bothered I would get them laser etched.

Someone should be able to do 20 tools for about £50 I would have thought. Be probably cheaper than getting a punch made, plus it will be difficult to get a clean stamp in the hardened material of your tools without damaging them.

Get them etched with "stolen from <your name>" then the only person who won't look like a complete thief using them (or trying to sell them) is you!

I'd just go for a bright paint colour that you can see from a distance.

If they are going to go to the bother of cleaning all the paint off, stamping them isn't going to stop them being stolen.

I did all my spanners with orange humbrol enamel 15 years ago and it's still on there (the one without paint is from another set, the painted one is kicking about in a bike toolkit somewhere).

I just engraved all of my tools with my initials..

All my tools were engraved with my surname when l started my current job 2 1/2 years ago, lock them up every night in my locker but still lost all the expensive ones plus my test gear to thieving w*nkers during the day.

Working on a site you can expect to get your tools stolen if you leave them about (especially with eastern europeans near by) but not in your own bloody office/workshop.

All I've done on any of my tools where I couldn't use stamps, is cut two little nicks into them with a hacksaw. We have a few people at work who have a habit of 'borrowing' tools, least this way you can identify them easily.

Aye. put a small mark/punch say in the same place next to the size stamp etc on them all...and stick some bright paint on them so you can tell it's yours 30 feet away. If someone is stupid enough to pinch it they will maybe go to the hassle of stripping the paint but will miss the punch mark......Thus you can smack the thiefing scum in the skull with said returned tool....and go fookin burn their toolbox after you grind it open to see what else the scummy little TWAT has been helping themselves too. Their is a good way of stopping it happening again it's called violence.

Bright paint so it's obvious from a distance it's your gear. You'll never properly mark a decent set of tools with letter punches.

Putting a couple of nicks on everything is OK but won't stop someone adding an extra nick and saying their stuff has 3. Can you tell I'm an engineer yet?

An acid etch pen works quite well. They're about £18 from RS, but worth it if you have decent tools.

I was goin to do them white lol but black is the way forward, no other black tools in the workshops so i'll mark them with that etching pen you spoke about and will that nick the metal a bit so when i paint over it it will still be there? and will the spray paint last as good as the brush on type of enamel? thanks guys.
