Been speaking to a lad on the TZR125 Forum. I have been told I can do away with the Reed block in my TZR125 engine and "convert" to a piston ported 2 stroke engine.

Not only will it improve the fuel flow. But It will give me 5-7mm extra mounting room for my Carb/Inlet. Which is a hell of a lot of room when you are trying to work in a space that I've got.

So is this advised? I guess I'd probably have to re-jet. also been told it'd be a good idea to fit a boost bottle if running like this?

Piston port does NOT improve flow!!

Reeds are a better design as they are pressure operated and you can get longer inlet duration/porting.

Oh and finally he is pulling your p1sser, if you take the reed block out it won't run as it will blast a fair bit of charge back out the carb!! Wink

Or was he suggesting other modifications not just take the reeds out? Thinking

Well considering that the MZ racing people ADD a reed block at great time and effort, I'd say you'd be daft to remove one from an engine that is designed to run with one. Piston porting is not very good. You'll certainly lose power and you may not even get the engine to run properly.

Its a bad idea, I'd reccomend putting the bike on a dyno first to see if you can improve how it is already set up before taking drastic measures such as ditching the reeds.

Hi

From memory the TZR engine uses crankcase reed valve induction. Converting it to piston porting would be a nightmare.

Piston porting does work well over a narrow range (with the range depending on the inlet port timing), but would run badly elsewhere. Reeds only open when required and work over a decent range.

All the best

Keith

As said above the TZR is crank case induction and thus can not be converted to piston ported. Whoever said that I'm guessing don't know sweet FA about whats he/she is talking about as the piston wont be able to stop the mixture thats picked up fuel on the intake from blowing back out past the carb....picking up another dose of fuel...then being sucked back into the engine on the next stroke...picking up yet another dose of fuel!!! You get the idea!!! Reed valve motors are a lot more flexible in the mid range whilst having a good top end because you can have a lot longer duration on the porting without having to run into these problems.

Same with disk valve engines only to a lesser point. Also running less crank case volume by removing the reed block will only make this even more of an issue I would think!!! Shocked

i think youd be pushing shit up hill, the timing overlap on reed valve engines is generally to much for the bike to run like a normal piston ported engine, you'd get terrible blow back through the carb
