OK, so I just bought an Aprilia RS50 and I absolutely love it. But I am having difficulties trying to find out if the battery is dead or not.

Electrically here is what doesn't work:

Indicators
Horn
Electric Start (But I think that the starter motor is gone)

But what is strange to me is the head lights work. When I rev the engine the lights go brighter so I am assuming it's connected to the engine and not the battery but I just want to make sure before buying a new battery or a charger for it.

The fact that the light goes brighter when you rev the engine means that the battery is being charged by the alternator, although the battery might not have enough juice to run the horn etc. aswell as the engine and lights Confused if you get a standard multimeter, set it to volts, positive probe to pos, neg to neg (i nearly made the mistake of putting neg to pos, my uncle went mad so i guess that would've been a bad idea lol). and whatever reading you get will be how much voltage it is putting out. if thats ok then i'd check the wiring out or maybe the bulbs need changing and horn nackered Confused
Does the starter motor make a ticking noise or does nothing happen?

i hope thats all correct what i've just said but maybe you should wait to get a second opinion incase i've missed something blatantly obvious (its happened many times before Laughing )

Reg/Rec could be on way out, as said check the voltage with the engine running on idle and when you rev it.

Also presuming it is an old lead acid type check the electrolyte level is ok as if it's too low and the plates warp it will be new battery time.
