PostPosted: 10:33 - 03 Jul 2009    Post subject: A2 Licence question - where is 25kw restriction indicated? Reply with quote

The 'motorcycle' category on my licence indicates 'A' - try as I might I can find nothing on it (or on the paper counterpart) that indicates my 2 year restriction.

How is my licence different from someone that's got full entitlement i.e done DAS course and passed?

Thanks in advance...

On the right hand side of the rear, under the column marked 12. Codes there should be "=<25KW" which is the restriction part. Nothing states on the license that it is only for 2 years, but it is not difficult to add 2 years to the date of passing and work it out, therefore any police officer should be able to deduce this.

Thanks for the reply but there is nothing listed in 'section 12' on my licence that relates to a motorcycle restriction - I've had a look at the Direct Gov website and that lists all the 'section 12' codes and it does not mention "=<25KW" or a code that would indicate this.

Any ideas anyone?

That would seem to indicate you don't have any restiction applied Shocked

My GF did her test on a 125 last year and her license quite clearly shows the =<25KW on the back of the photocard

Thumbs Up Cheers Fellas - If that's true, then just for once a cock-up by the DVLA has not ended up f*cking somebody over!

Anyone else confirm this?

I've just checked mine and it's the same as yuri2085, on the A category row under 12.Codes it says =<25KW.

I thought I still had a year to go but the start date is April so it's quite nice to find that out! Very Happy

If you haven't got anything on yours under that column then you're a very lucky bugger!! (Not sure I'd take advantage of it though in case the DVLA database still has you as restricted).

coud always call the dvla up posing as a bike shop. say you have mr xxxxx here who wants to test ride a bike but forgot his license and you just want to confirm he's got a full license.

happened to me when i rented a van and stupidly forgot my counterpart. they rental company just handed the phone to me so gave my consent to the dvla person and bobs your uncle Smile

of course you'll have to try a different voice or accent as the shop owner Wink
good luck

Well I would assume that the DVLA did screw up but I would also bare in mind that you will probably be on their database as restricted so a police check would likely show you up as that. However for say going to a dealer for a test ride, would show you as having a full license.

yes but if they dvla drone checks and it says restricted they should point this out to the "shop owner" so that they dont let him ride an unrestricted bike.

Thanks for replies folks -

I'm thinking of phoning DVLA and acting daft (shouldn't be hard for me Smile) say something like "...my mate has said after passing his DAS he still had to ride for 2 years on a 33bhp bike - I'm sure this is not correct according to the licence I have etc..." and get them to check.

What do you think?

I was in the same boat. When I passed 3 years back on a 125 there was no restriction put on my licence. It was as though I passed on a full licence. So I went and got myself a GPZ 500s and never had any problems.

Its been over two years now and I am entititled to a full licence however DVLA is knows for making cockups. They were on watchdog a couple weeks back again so they probably did the same to you as they did me Thumbs Up

Yer you dont want them to twig that it was a mistake, just check the mistake was made at their end too and reap the rewards.

Go with Bofh's idea and tell us the results, that is less likely to make them twig. Thumbs Up

its called social engineering and done right you'd be amazed at what you can get out of people.

posing as a seller is the best way of doing it as they will have to check in detail your entitlements and restrictions or the seller could be in trouble for allowing you to "test" ride a bike without the right license.

Edit: alternatively get someone you trust to phone them and pass the phone to you to give your approval that way you dont have to worry about putting on a false voice.

yes he has to call them posing as a bike seller.
then pass the phone to the buyer.
if the 2 voices sound the same then even the dvla drone might get suspicious.
not saying ive ever done this but it does work

wait 2 weeks phone them up and tell them you haven't received anything yet.. they will send you a new one and see if its the same.

I'm going to ask a mate to ring DVLA when I see him next week. I will let you know how I get on.

Cheers.

At the end of your 2 years, are you meant to send your licence back to have the =<25kW bit removed?

Just to be 100% clear.

This is the code on the back of your license.

No need. Anyone looking at your license would be able to see that you passed your test more than 2 years ago and so that the restriction no longer applied.

In the UK yes.

But try telling that to a french motorway cop at 3am. =<25KW means equal to or less than 25KW .

To be fair the should have 2 lines on the license, with the dates clearly marked.
