Was gonna rat my 1996 Yamaha XJ600N so wanted to buy something to keep me on the road. Picked up a GPZ500 for £400. After a couple of days thought it would make a much better rat bike so heres how it turned out.

Heres how it looked to start with ( not my bike but same year and same exhaust. NOT IN THIS CONDITION EITHER !!! Twisted Evil )
https://p1.bikepics.com/pics/2007/04/01/bikepics-849105-full.jpg

Stripped it down and got the matt black paint out

so i now have two bikes Smile

Will change the headlight for an old round one when i find a cheap one on fleabay, but very happy with how it turned out.

When considering this project, did your plan look something like this:

1. Take perfectly good bike

2. Spend time and money deliberately making it look like a pile of crap

Rat biking (as far as I understand) is supposed to be about keeping a bike going at minimal cost, not worrying about the cosmetics. Seems to me to deliberately 'rat' a bike like that is the exact opposite of this philosophy.

Like the naked divvy btw.

It's lazy modification if you ask me and as you said, makes a semi-decent bike look amazingly awful.

Very true. Rat biking and survival bikes are the same but completely different. Rat bike is like you described, kept running at minimal cost, over time will look tatty etc.
Survival bike is just purposely making it look cheap and tacky like the OP has done. It is a special interest look to the bike. Personally I quite like survival bikes Embarassed but would have to do it to a bike worth <£300 in the first place.

It was in a sorry state when i picked it up, it had been stood in a garden for 3 years, all the panels where held on with cable ties, it had no keys, but a friend got it running without too much trouble and ratting it was the best way to "keep it on the road". As for cost about £30 on Halfords matt black , £7 for the tail lights and
£12 on the fork boots.
May have paid over the odds at £400 to start with but it was fitted with a Muzzy exhaust that cost £360 and was as good as new being fully stainless ( plus sounds ace Cool )

Cheers for the divvy comment, a truly underated bike imo

I think having the 'before' pics as a different decent nick bike gives the wrong impression to some Wink shame you've no before pics of the actual bike.

I kinda like it, it is getting more common now (that 'look') but it's still one that would grab my attention whether parked at Tescos or a bike rally, a stock GPZ wouldn't so much.

Very brave using the 'R' word on here though - too much debate for me!! Laughing

It's a shame the exhaust is worth nowhere near £360 now you have covered in yet more matt black paint Rolling Eyes

Just noticed this -

Shocked

Ok maybe about £6 of it was high temp paint, but otherwise normal matt black is like 2-3 quid a can - how much did you bloody use!?!? Neutral

nice survival bike, now you can sit back and enjoy the fact that binning the bike will only make it look cooler, so crash damage will never be a problem again. Laughing

Cheers

4 tins of 500ml Halfords paint @ £6.99 a tin used this as it was recommend by ratbike.org to be the hardest wearing and petrol resistant.
half a tin of Hammerite high heat for the exhaust, found in my dads shed left over from when he resprayed his bbq.
Some hammerite black for the swinging arm also from old mans shed.
I live on the Lizard Cornwall and wanted to cover all metal as the sea air eats thru bikes even in the summer and seeing as i have no car licence i need this bike to ride thruout the year. My xj600N has been thru 3 winters now and has been kept in a garage and washed regulaly but is still rusting due to the salt air. rekon the GPZ will fair a lot better Smile

That sounds a good price.

I think over the years, the terminology has got lost in the post!

A rat bike is/was traditionally a bike that has been left in a bad state, and has been 'rescued' from the scrap heap and been given a new lease of life.

Your bike, therefore, isn't a rat bike...it's a custom made bike. Smile
