Recently i thought it was about time i dealt with a couple of stone chips on the exhaust cover of my bike. It's been like that since i got it but i could see the paint slowly beginning to bubble up as the rust started to grow underneath the paint.

Anyway got myself some silver paint (apparently the wrong silver Rolling Eyes ) sanded it down and gave it a once over.

The problem is it looks a bit crap now (surprise, surprise), but at least it'll stop the rust from getting any worse.

I'm gonna take some time now and redo it properly. I was just wondering if you guys have any tips (or can link me to some) on painting?

I've already got myself 1: Make sure the colour you're painting matches the colour that's already there Rolling Eyes

does the exhaust cover get hot??

what i would do is:-
Arrow use a rough wet and dry sandpaper to take the paint completely off, or if you have a wire brush on a drill that will work good.
Arrow if you take all the paint off so that the metal is smooth, then you can wash it and spray some primer paint on it.
Arrow once you have a completely smooth cover you can wash the dust off.

next...

Arrow spray on about 4 thin layers of silver paint to get an even finish.
Arrow then spray about 4 layers of lacquer to protect it from the weather.
Arrow be sure to leave adequate drying time between coats

the trick is in the prep work, make sure there arent any dents, lumps or deep scratches because you will see them when the paint dries.

seems like a long process but it will give the best finish and it will last ages.
and the lacquer can be quite hard to spray if you havent done it before, its very thin... so keep your distance and spray the cover untill it looks wet. you can do as many coats as you want so dont try to cover it in 1 go.

hope this helps.

Yeah I wasn't going to jump straight in, have some bits of metal lying about I was going to try spraying first make sure I can do a good enough job.

I wouldn't say it gets hot exactly, not nearly as hot as the can underneath it, but it does get warm.

Thanks for the tips.
