Last thursday I started doing some work on my 4x4 with an angle grinder, cutting up the pickup tub in my garden. Today I've received a letter from the council about the alleged noise nuisance from me working on my car. Rolling Eyes

Called them up, someone has complained about the noise from my angle grinding. Bloke on the end of the phone explains that they've asked the person to make a record over the next couple of weeks of when the noise happens.

I've got more stuff to do to the pickup tub involving an angle grinder. I've got other stuff that I'll be cutting up with the angle grinder.

Assuming the noise is only during the day and it's not all the time, I'm quite entitled to be doing something which makes noise in my garden?

The letter goes on about how noise monitoring equipment could be used, how the noise nuisance could be confirmed by council bods, etc etc. If they do observe me making a noise, then what could happen, I see no reason why I shouldn't be allowed to work on my car. Rolling Eyes

I dont know the ins and outs? but it depends how long the noise lasts for and how loud it is?

I know I am a kill joy, but lads next door but one to me years ago, (I was pregnant and had a small child at the time) would regularly practice with their "band" in their garage, I dont have a problem with noise, but when its 3 oclock in the morning (I know yours isnt..) couple of times a week when his dad was on nights it began to pee me off, so I very politely asked them to turn the amp down a little, got sworn at profusely and often abuse hurled at me after that, Other Half at the time went round at 2am one morning and threatened to shove the amp where the sun didnt shine, he got much the same, Police were rubbish,

they stopped at night and would watch for my little boys curtains closing in the afternoon when he went for his nap and would laugh and straight in the garage, huge row.

after a few months of this I called the council (who could hear the row they were making over the phone as I spoke to them) came straight round and sat with a DB meter, they were forced to get rid of all their equipment or it would have been forcibly removed.

at the end of the day i only asked them to turn it down a bit at gone midnight, had they just done so and been polite in return?....

so yes, just to show, they can and will do something about it

I dont think someone angle grinding a bit for a few days etc is a problem, what would your neighbour do if you were building an extension to your house?

Have you ever considered taking up bagpipe playing as a hobby?

It lasted for an hour or two on Thursday afternoon, so they called and complained about it that afternoon. Rolling Eyes Was angle grinding again yesterday afternoon so no doubt that'll have made them cry as well. Rolling Eyes

Bag pipes do sound like a good alternative to angle grinding. Laughing

No neighbours who work nights, don't know who would have been offended enough by angle grinding to make a complaint about the noise, but they weren't offended enough to ask me to stop. Rolling Eyes

Meh, I'm off to do some angle grinding now. Mr. Green

I generally find 2 and 4 stroke powered gardening tools are the most irritating.
They seem to be tuned to the most annoying whine.
Plus the random starting and stopping and duration intensifies the annoyability factor.

Once you've finished angle grinding you could take up gardening Very Happy

I'm using electric tools. Neutral

How long it'll continue, well I finished it just now apart from a couple of edges that need smoothing off a bit.

So the temporary inconvenience has finished, I hope the complaining neighbour has fun making a record for the next two weeks of noise being made. Laughing Only possibly annoying thing about it is they'll think complaining to the council got me to stop angle grinding, rather than I've stopped angle grinding because I've finished. Sad

Sure I'll find something else to angle grind in a couple of weeks. Razz

Any form of metal pipe or steel oil drums are good ones.

You might want to make yourself a couple of steel drums to go with the bagpipes for the Scotio-calypso fusion funk band you're setting up.

If the council come round, ask them if you're eligible for a grant.

Start hanging around near the local primary school in a big coat with tinted aviators on taking pictures of the kids.

They'll soon forget about the noise then Thumbs Up

If your not doing it at a regular time pattern then the council won't know when to come and monitor your activities. I wouldn't pay to much attention to it unless your at it all day everyday.

Nope, no small kids/babies, at least not that I'm aware of. I can be sure that it wasn't anyone needing to sleep as if it was they'd have asked/told me to STFU instead of complaining to the council who send a letter which is received the following week.

I'm sure everyone is going to love me when I get around to fitting a train horn to my car as it'll need testing. Mr. Green Mr. Green

If they're unable to accomodate that, fvck 'em.

Agreed. Thumbs Up This works wonders with the neighbours, the best solution for parties too.

I think Hetzers suggestion is on the button. Whe we used to live in flats we kept everyone informed of possible loud work/ parties - didn't get a single moan. It's not just polite, but if people are annoyed then they can't really claim 'noise nuisance' as they were aware it was going to happen and had time to come and see us if it was going to be a problem.
