Certainly interesting, think it is a genuine threat to Windows, probably moreso than OS X and Linux.

Loads of blah blah blah there about how fantastic it'll be, serious threat to microsoft and yada yada...but will all my apps run on it? My games? No, they won't. Nothing will run on it. And that's why Windows dominates.

Im sure this has been around for ages.

it's like chrome. Just because google is massive and rich doesn't mean everything they make will be as good as its search engine.

I reckon that it will get a good share of the netbook market, for those that just want browsing, email and a bit of word processing, but as a serious contender as a replacement O/S for desktops/laptops? Nah.

Just looked at other articles and it appears they are hardly re-inventing the wheel. Apparently it is just another Linux distro. However obviously the fact it is "Google" means it will have greater pulling power.

If I could have an operating system that was very fast to boot but could only do web browsing, msn messenger and a form of media player I would probably use it as a primary system.

i think 1 of google's selling points is that the OS will be quick to boot enabling you to get online quickly. apparently it's being designed with browsing in mind rather than the browser for the OS. a neat selling point i think, let's hope it's not blurb.

i think any extra competition to M$ is good.

One of the reasons that Linux didn't really get going is because there was no real 'brand' behind it, the other is that M$ just decided to bomb in on the netbook market with cheap copies of XP for OEM's.

Netbooks are the real opportunity for a google OS, reallity is M$ are far too well established to be unseated, and Joe Average is scared shitless by a bit of change...most of them are confused by windows and they have had that for a dogs age.....so what's this penguin for then Rolling Eyes

Aside from netbook-makers Acer, Asus and HP, Google said it is already working with Freescale, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Toshiba - as well as software maker Adobe, which is currently developing a line of online office applications

https://www.itpro.co.uk/612541/google-reveals-chrome-hardware-partners

Well it is gaining some support then. Sounds a lot like it is going to be more of an online OS rather than the traditional OS being on the hard drive.

As said, it will most likely be just another GUI tacked on to the Linux kernel. It may be fast but it will also be a bag of shite like most of the other software people nail onto that kernel.

Would google be able to mimic/copy/use microsoft files or be able to make files that you can use to run games "designed"?

I would try this new OS but if it could run my games then I would consider a move at least to a secondary system to begin with.

However as most games are primarily for windows I cant see this being anything bigger than a netbook/bespoke system.

If the code was powerful enough while being lightwieght then maybe they could get a toe in the mass storage market as long as it can look at different file systems.

I dont see them taking a large market share "yet" wait until they buy MS.

Having used the chrome browser I can't say I'm blown away by the news. Most of the big names are going hard for cloud computing at the moment, google are in a fairly solid position to get something running but in hardware terms I'd say the UK infrastructure would need massively reworking before it could support the bandwidth required. We're already seeing mainstream ISPs shaping traffic and throttling at peak times.
