Anyone had a Hernia?

Went to the docs today after a stabbing pain in my stomach all week, and a painful lump that I noticed Monday.

He thinks I may have a Hernia, and i'm going for an ultrasound to find out.

Although nothing is definate yet, pretty pissed off, as my job is mostly lifting heavy things, this has some bad implications for whether or not to carry on with that long term.

Anyone had any experience of one? Any good news? Any advice?

I had one, whilst in hospital my dad got me a Corgi Fiat X19, my brother got me a finger fright puppet.

Well a friend of mine had one and he's not been able to play rugby since it was 3-4 years ago. Rugby was the thing he really accelerated he was off for months from school.

I caught a hernia from someone at work, lazy bugger wouldn't lift properly. Anyways mine was low down (groin area) and i was offered the choice of keyhole or open. I chose open as its a stronger repair. Was in at 9am and out by 1pm. Left with a 100mm scar(bit excessive but not bothered)
Good repair job so far.

Just been to the hospital, after ringing up this morning confirming that they do in fact offer a "turn up and wait" service for ultrasound.

Took half a day off work, put £4 down the rip of machines in the car park to cover an hour or two, walked to Ultrasound department, only to be told that we had been informed wrong, they can't do it without an appointment, cant do it today, under staffed, will probably be a four week wait.

This massive investment in the NHS over the past few years. Where the fuck is it going? Car parking machines probably.

Rang a private clinic in the area, and got an appointment for 0930 Monday morning. Wallet will be a lot lighter as a result, but probably cheaper than taking 4 weeks off work.

Quite a few guys at work have been off with them in the last couple of years, think it's a truck driver thing, lifting heavy stuff, pulling heavy palletts around etc. Most come back to work after a week or so but ask for light duties, so no manual handling, which I suppose you can't really do, so you'll have to ask to be an office monkey for a month or so

I had one in operated on in March, it took 13 weeks from seeing my GP to having the op done.

Also does it squelch when you push the lump and then come straight back out if you cough or squeeze?

I had one.
Got it repaired - keyhole style.
Convalescence was a pain. Painful at first then just bored as couldn't lift anything, although encouraged to walk a lot. Took longer than expected due to some infection (was told it just happens sometimes).

Used to drive a bright yellow TR7 LHD. What a horrid horrid car. But mucho fun for donuts when yer 18. And yes just like the Capri, sometimes you had to put a bag of sand in the boot in winter. And expect the wipers to work when they wanted. Did i say they were horrid.

BTW there is plenty of pain to enjoy post hernia OP

Between myself and my brother we had quite a few, but i don't think as many as 40.

My brother put the finger fright in an envelope when he brought it in to me in the hospital. I can still remember the excitement of opening it up and discovering the finger fright in there.

However, as i previously indicated, the X19 was a major disappointment, possibly one of the biggest of my life. I think i might have cried. Strange really, because i quite like them now, and would certainly prefer one to a TR7.

Apparently, the hospital fucked up my anaesthetic somewhat and i woke up on the way to the theatre and started to tell the nurses all about dinosaurs.

I also recall that after the operation i was terrified of standing up straight, and was pushed in a wheelchair across the hospital carpark to my dad's Hillman Hunter. When i got home, my brother had caught a hedgehog in the back garden, and i forgot all about my terror and ran across the garden to see it.

Curious what you remember, isn't it?

...and i remember asking the anesthetist loads of questions about drugs..awoke feeling fuck'in excellent..really chirpy. Got home and all was well till the next day. Had to walk in a crouch position and was used as a coffee table...And them X19s i saw 1 too many rich bints driving them...put me off

Cheers for the replies folks... even about the finger monsters and TR7's i'm sure its all good stuff

Went for the scan today (god arent private hospitals swanky), and am told its not a hernia, which I suppose is good, and there was nothing showing up to indicate any other major issues.

So all good news, despite being much poorer for the month, although am now left with a painful lump that I haven't a clue what it is.

Signed off for the remainder of the week, so will just wait to see if it gets less painful with rest and go from there.
