My brother had an off today on his Honda VTR.

One broken right thumb & a few x-rays later he's ok, but his bike is not quite as lucky. The bike isn't a SP model, but still gutted as he only picked it up on Friday. Loose gravel in the middle of the road, right in the middle of a corner isn't a good thing

The right handle bar has snapped clean off, the right foot peg has broken & rear brake lever bent. All easily replaced

The right hand side fairing is scuffed & right hand exhaust has bent inward a little, again, easily replaced.

Now for the the iffy part. The crank case has a hole in it where the bike scraped along the road. We did think this would be a protector case, but it's not. The size of the hole is, from what I can remember, about the size of the tip of your little finger.

I'm thinking that a replacement crank case is needed, but what if any gravel/crap got into the case where the hole was created Is it possible to 'flush' the engine. The engine has not been started since coming off.

Any help or suggestions muchly appreciated

I had the same on a bandit 400, whip the sump off and have a look around after draining the oil. Shouldnt be too much ingress with such a small hole.

the the worst part about firestorms, my mate had a lowside on a roundabout on his, the hole was alot bigger though, still stayed free from gravel! Do as Mr Fisty says!

I doubt very much he'll need a new crank. I smashed mine in an off and it acted like a shovel as it churned through the mud. I just drained the oil almost all the way, then when there was a little bit still left in, tipped the bike over and drained the remaining through the side. That way it will have pulled any bits of grass/mud etc with it.

Now thats a hole

We've been looking today & found nearly all the parts, bar the crank cover. We were concerned about internal damage from any dirt or general crap that could have entered into the engine through the hole.

'Thumbs up' is all he can do at the mo as his hand is now in a cast all the way up to his middle forearm.
