Hey

Ive recently started taking my driving lessons and thinking about getting a car.

As it would be my first car im not going for something expensive.
Ive been looking at Corsa 1.2 sxi, Pug 206 and a Pug 106.

Ive always been into the modifying scene.

Anyway i do want to modify my car But dont want it to look to chavy etc

Have any of use got any ideas on which car, mods, websites etc ?

Pictures of yours would be much appreciated to Mr. Green

Nice 1 Thumbs Up

Buy a Suzuki Swift 1.3, the old shape one. It'll be far better than any of that other generic shite you mentioned.

All the GTi's are rotting to pieces so you can pick up GTi bits for pennies, which leads me to my next point.

You can swap the GTi body kit, interior....pretty much everything will be inter changeable, if you're into mechanics it wouldn't be difficult to swap the 1.3 GTi motor in - and believe me the G13B motor is just awesome Very Happy

My GTi's for inspiration -

Better yet just buy a GTi that's still running, I had one for my 1st car and it was great.

Why not be a little different and go for an old late 70's or early 80's car ?
Mark 1 or 2 Escort / VW Scirocco /Golf

I guarantee you will pull in one of these.
And dont try the age old line of "I want a reliable car for transport" .
The reality is you want some minge!

Easy to work on.
Old Skool street cred.
Cheap.
Just as much fun, if not more than some sanitised modern Corsa Sick

Nice tidy little number on ebay ... 1.8 GT ... Buy it Now £750 ... but he will take 600 easy.
Will piss on any of those chavvy little Corsa's:

Don't 'modify' your first car, because:

1) You will crash it

2) Insurance costs will kill you

Save yourself the time and money and just run a grotter for the first 12months.

Old VW. Golf (Mk1/2), 'Rocco, Polo (Mk2/3), whatever. Built like brick shithouses, I've just sold my '90 Polo and even after two years being laid up there's not a spot of rust on it and the engines just run and run, thrive on abuse. Not in to serious modifying but suspension lowering kits are cheap enough and not a big job, and make it much better to drive- the Polos at least are a bit wallowy in corners. 1043s are underpowered if you want to go "fast" but fine otherwise, 1300s aren't much better- but you can always drop a GT lump in, or even a G40.

Dunno much about Golfs and derivatives (Jetta etc), other than the german cars at least are just as well built and reliable. Still plenty in breaker's yards too so bits are cheap.

also don't buy a main stream model car

the insurance will be twice the price

I'm 30 and if i buy a 1.2 corsa it will cost me £1300 fully comp to insure

if i buy a 1.3 KIA pride (bare with me here) its only £400

if i buy a 1.6 fiesta mk1 super sport and insure it on a classic policy its £264.78

or a mk1 land rover which is tax free and will cost £159 to insure

It's hard to believe some people in here were ever young, VW Scirroco, XR3i as a first car at 17/18, almost every insurance company would just laugh, except the odd one like Adrian Flux who would chose a number between 2 and 9 and put three zeros after it.

As for the original post, I don't see how you can buy a leaner hatch like those listed and modify it without it looking chavvy. The very fact you've used the word modify and that you're 'into the modifying scene' show you're salivating at the chance to fit chrome trim, a fat exhaust pipe and some primed fibreglass sideskirts.

Best first car I have ever seen owned as a first car (if you get me), was a 1.0 non turbo diesel Pug 106. Friend of mine had it. Bomb proof, 60mpg, insurance was cheap as chips. Wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding but it's a car, therefore it's cool.

What you then need is some spinner hubcaps, for the irony, but I don't think that's your 'style'.

Sigh.

Same advice I've given every time this thread has happened in the last 5 years.

Run through lots of quote for lots of different cars of all different shapes and sizes, and buy whatever has the cheapest quote.

Remember, a £500 car isn't so cheap when you spend £2k on the insurance.

I would investigate older saloons and estates, hateful hatches (metro etc). Whatever is cheap insure.

You will crash it. If it's quick you'll crash it and get points. If it's quick and old it will catch you out and send you backwards into a hedge. If it's quick, old, rusty and "modded", it will catch you out and send you backwards into a hedge, severing your legs. Your insurance company and everyone on BCF will laugh at you when you try to make a claim.

But hey. You're a young stupid cunt, so you'll buy a fiesta or corsa or such, spend £1500 on the insurance, fit a bodykit and noisy exhaust, not declare any mods, and not be able afford petrol for it.

The "I told you so" thread will follow in a few months.
