I have a r reg honda cb1000, which intermitently clunks in gear. I have cleaned the chain, which was caked with gung and lube, and the gear change was super smooth, then when I came to it today, it clunked into 1st with a jolt. Any ideas ? I have had the bike 6 months, and it has always been smooth gear change. I believe it is a hydraulic clutch ! The bike has done approx 16k

Honda's are renowned for changing from neutral to 1st like dropping a hammer into a bucket of water. Mine does it pretty much every morning and has done from new. If it's just that I wouldn't worry too much Smile

Thanks for that, it is intermitant which made me think it wasn't serious, but when i cleaned the crap of the chain, and front sprocket, the previous owner liked chain lube, it was so smooth i couldn't feel it change gear. The change to first sometimes stalls the engine I forgot to add that, but it is reassuring to hear that it is common.

I'm not too sure about the engine stalling, maybe your clutch is a little out of adjustment? I'm not sure how hydraulic clutches work as mine is the traditional cable type.

But my 1st gear clunk is enough to shake the nuts off my mole grips and the screws out of my top box after a few weeks! Wouldn't have it any other way though to be fair

I found mine started clunking and I have done so much to solve it then i rekon i prob just got lazy with gear changes (although perhaps they are damaged a bit).

But now i shift all my changes down and up in a way that I dont even need to use the clutch (sometimes i realise after a downshift that i didnt even pull clutch in past biting point but i try and use the clutch on downs always) even though they are smooth without.
