An excellent point, we dont have any idea of what the technology would rely on etc.
But, if it travels through a dimension of time, then it would have to travel through the dimension of space...and considering there is no direction for either, they simply exist as a human concept, what would stop them coming back. Proper head scratcher.
Maybe future-current law prevents them from travelling backwards, but then, surely there'd be rebels that would go against it.
We must assume that, should the economy not have failed by whatever point it is invented, the future of the time machine itself would only expand and become a modern thing for everyone to have, given the trend for human development. ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

Time travel backwards is insupportable. Only travel into the future would be permitted, (for Euromillions numbers, then I'd mothball the thing.)
Someone once asked me this...
If the universe was rewound to the very beginning, to the big bang itself and it was to happen again, everything being equal, would things turn out exactly the same? Every molecule, every, ummm, quark, would exist in exactly the same way. everything would form exactly as it did before right down to the smallest amoeba, leaf and watermelon...
One step further, human kind would be the same, our decision would be the same, everything would be repeated exactly as before...
Basically, randomness doesn't exist even in real life. It's all preordained.
Weird.

The time machine has already been invented multiple times, but each first flight of "I'll pop back a few minutes, just to try it out and be on the safe side" leaves the pilot gasping for air in space, since the planet is no longer where it was. They try and hold their breath whilst frantically attempting to jump back to the point where they left, but burn up in the atmosphere as the planet hits them at 67,000 mph. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. If I had it, there is nooo way I'd share it. I would be selfish and keep it as a secret. It is perfectly possible for an infinitely advanced civilization to build a time travel device. I did a paper on this at university.
Basically an infinitely advanced civilization can do anything that is allowed within the laws of physics. It would be possible for said infinitely advanced civilization to build a wormhole based time travel device, but it would not allow you to travel backwards beyond the date that the device was first switched on. The device works thusly:
Mr Infinite advancement creates two large gravity wells, and along with it a stable wormhole of which he can move what we shall call the 'entrance' and the 'exit' for the sake of argument.
He will leave the exit in a room, in a building on earth. He will take the entrance and put it aboard a spaceship that can travel at or near the speed of light. He'll send the spaceship off for a long journey at relativistic speeds and then return it to the room where the exit exists.
Now, if Mr Infinite Advancement walks into the entrance, he will emerge from the exit at a point in time before he entered the entrance. The length of time depends on the length and speed of the relativistic journey of the entrance to the wormhole. As stated, the earliest he will emerge is the day that the machine was first activated.
Its all about relativity my friend, and the 'coin' that the OP mentioned doesn't exist, because there is a third way. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

If it were possible to travel back in time, I'll give a run down of the likely outcome of revealing yourself to the people of that time:
Ancient Times: Made into a God, statues in your likeness, sacrificed.
Medieval Times: Burnt for being a witch.
Modern Times: Called a nutter, placed into mental health facility.
When I created my time machine, which is capable of forward travel only, I had no idea that the Cliff Richard of your time was a large name in music with so many hits. Had I strayed down the same path as him, I wouldn't be here so young. ____________________ Current Bikes: Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 (2020)
