A coin is flipped.

On one side - A time machine will never exist, due to the fact that if one had been invented, no matter in what age, we would have heard about/seen one by now, as it would have been sent backwards to this era.

The other side of the coin - it may well exist in the future, they just decided not to visit pre-2009. Or make themselves known.

Discuss.

Coin lands on it's side, the time machine they invent can only travel forward in time (and maybe return to the time it was sent away).

An excellent point, we dont have any idea of what the technology would rely on etc.

But, if it travels through a dimension of time, then it would have to travel through the dimension of space...and considering there is no direction for either, they simply exist as a human concept, what would stop them coming back. Proper head scratcher.

Maybe future-current law prevents them from travelling backwards, but then, surely there'd be rebels that would go against it.

We must assume that, should the economy not have failed by whatever point it is invented, the future of the time machine itself would only expand and become a modern thing for everyone to have, given the trend for human development.

Time travel backwards is insupportable. Only travel into the future would be permitted, (for Euromillions numbers, then I'd mothball the thing.)

Someone once asked me this...

If the universe was rewound to the very beginning, to the big bang itself and it was to happen again, everything being equal, would things turn out exactly the same? Every molecule, every, ummm, quark, would exist in exactly the same way. everything would form exactly as it did before right down to the smallest amoeba, leaf and watermelon...

One step further, human kind would be the same, our decision would be the same, everything would be repeated exactly as before...

Basically, randomness doesn't exist even in real life. It's all preordained.

Weird.

Thumbs Up

I don't think time travel going back in time before the machine was created is possible, due to the conservation of energy laws.

For example, if I use X resources (and resources = energy by the general theory of relativity) to make a time machine, if I theoretically went back in time to before those resources/energy had been consumed, the universe at that point would have an additional X amount of energy in it.

Similarly the universe at the time from where I came would have lost X amount of energy.

This iz seemply not allowed, and so I haf proven zat ze backwards time travel iz unfeezable.

You might get away with forwards time travel, and then back to the time when the machine was initially created, but that would be in no way as cool.

People always say (like Horsefaceman) that they'd get winning lottery numbers etc. I would go back in time, and release every single number one chart hit from the next forty years and be hailed as the greatest musician ever. Infact it'd trip people the fcuk out, because they aren't ready for some of the music they'll hear.
Then I'll prophecise of the second coming of christ, claiming it will be called George W. Bush.

You'd just end up being burnt at the stake! Shocked

I'd travel back in time to the begining of the 2nd world war and become a doctor or something. I can just see it - all the available MILF desperate for a bit of a physical! Twisted Evil

The time machine has already been invented multiple times, but each first flight of "I'll pop back a few minutes, just to try it out and be on the safe side" leaves the pilot gasping for air in space, since the planet is no longer where it was. They try and hold their breath whilst frantically attempting to jump back to the point where they left, but burn up in the atmosphere as the planet hits them at 67,000 mph.

Aye...

You could do that, but look what happened to Michael Jackson and all the other dead pop and rock stars... Heck, someone assasinated John Lennon and Paul McCartney married that one legged blonde fruitloop... On the upside, Cliff is still floating around in a big gay fog of botox...

Hold on a minute! You're not are you?? You've already done it haven't you. You're Cliff Richard! Admit it! A hit in every decade since 1860?? It's so obvious to me now!! Shocked

I'll just stick to the anonymity and peace of my massive euromillions win.

Ta.

How would you know a time machine hasn't been sent back to this era...? Perhaps the finder of said machine is keeping it to him/herself!!!!

Thats my point. Maybe its "under wraps" by an individual (selfish fuck) or the government. With the way humans operate, we would have definitely heard of it by now if it was real. Highest bidder and all that.

If I had it, there is nooo way I'd share it. I would be selfish and keep it as a secret. I have the capacity for keeping secrets...that's why people tell their secrets, as I never tell... Cool

It is perfectly possible for an infinitely advanced civilization to build a time travel device. I did a paper on this at university.

Basically an infinitely advanced civilization can do anything that is allowed within the laws of physics. It would be possible for said infinitely advanced civilization to build a wormhole based time travel device, but it would not allow you to travel backwards beyond the date that the device was first switched on. The device works thusly:

Mr Infinite advancement creates two large gravity wells, and along with it a stable wormhole of which he can move what we shall call the 'entrance' and the 'exit' for the sake of argument.

He will leave the exit in a room, in a building on earth. He will take the entrance and put it aboard a spaceship that can travel at or near the speed of light. He'll send the spaceship off for a long journey at relativistic speeds and then return it to the room where the exit exists.

Now, if Mr Infinite Advancement walks into the entrance, he will emerge from the exit at a point in time before he entered the entrance. The length of time depends on the length and speed of the relativistic journey of the entrance to the wormhole. As stated, the earliest he will emerge is the day that the machine was first activated.

Its all about relativity my friend, and the 'coin' that the OP mentioned doesn't exist, because there is a third way. Karma

But who says the laws of physics as we know it are actually set in stone ? , in that there could be other laws discovered in the future which mean what is true now is not true in the future.

An example of this is the light is it particles or waves debate some 100 or so years ago where by light can act as photons (ie like particles) or it can act as if it is an energy wave.

This also completely neglects mechanical singularity whereby machines get smarter than humans and can redesign themselves to be smarter than the previous design which humans couldn't think of and keep redesigning and thus design things humans couldn't think of ever.

If it were possible to travel back in time, I'll give a run down of the likely outcome of revealing yourself to the people of that time:

Ancient Times: Made into a God, statues in your likeness, sacrificed.
Medieval Times: Burnt for being a witch.
Modern Times: Called a nutter, placed into mental health facility.

When I created my time machine, which is capable of forward travel only, I had no idea that the Cliff Richard of your time was a large name in music with so many hits. Had I strayed down the same path as him, I wouldn't be here so young.

At which point the machines will just regard humans as a pointless, destructive parasite and wipe them out.
