Mini rant.

1. It rains a lot in Britain. It is raining heavily right now and Sky decides that it cannot recieve a satellite signal. I'm pretty sure I never had this problem with Freeview.

2. Sky Broadband is probably the worst internet service I have ever used. 5am I get 6mbps. 5pm I get (and I genuinly kid you not) 0.3mbps.

Middle Finger

I cannot believe my parents are paying nigh on £80 a month for this shit corporation.

Sky HD box has now turned itself off and will not respond to commands. Even after it was switched off at the mains.

C****.

I have sky broadband and no problem with it and it never stops raining here. BT was the worst I ever had with disconnections 30 times a day and threats for going over allowence and then my parents have limited access whatever that mean . I will stay with sky.

Don't know about sky...

But if its even slightly foggy or misty then my freeview thing goes tits up. It also decides to stop working between 10:30 and 11pm for reasons which escape me. I know they used to switch the polarity of the TV signal but I didn't think they did that with digital...

I have BT broadband which is pish by default. Ever since I plugged the daft tellybox thing in, the wireless function hasn't worked. It's just as well I'm not lying in bed looking smug imagining that I absolutely had to book the last two remaining flights to some place only to have my wireless signal go down... Ah, but it's ok because I realise it's BT wireless... Rolling Eyes

I would phone them but frankly, when weighing 'just plugging shit in' against having to explain the problem over and over again in stilted English to several different phone monkey's in India... Life is to short...

Thumbs Up

The problem with Sky is that most installers do a completely wank job at installing the dish for you so if you check your signal strength it will probably only be good enough to get a signal in decent weather... if an installer does his/het job properly they will fine tune your dish to get a top-notch signal and then you won't have problems when it rains.. most are just interested in how many installs they can get done in a day and leave once they have got a rough signal.

My advise is to buy a cheap inline sat finder go and sit next to your dish with it plugged in and spend a little time getting the strongest signal possible - it takes a bit of fiddling but definitely worth doing! Thumbs Up

My Sky dish is perfect, the Sky+ box, however, is a pile of festering monkey jism. Frequent lock-ups and non-respond to remote issues and I have always had this with Sky boxes (the default ones).

The broadband is excellent though, no issues here Mr. Green

Cheers

Generally speaking, I get only 512k speeds from Sky Broadband. Granted, I live in a houseshare and am far from the router but even when no-one is in, I get 512k. One or twice I've maybe had 6mbps but in the space of a year? Laughing Was exactly the same at my old place too, sky bb is pants.

Don't know about the telly, don't watch it myself.

Since the EPG for SkyHD was updating it is so as fook! I hate it, takes about 3 seconds to change channel.

We are on the £17 ADSL Sky Broadband as our exchange doesn't have any LLU's on it.

I don't think anybody will ever install a LLU on our rural exchange. Orange have one according to www.samknows.com but I go onto the Orange Site and it says that they don't. Neutral

Yes, unfortunately a well lined up dish won't sort out dodgy hardware, but should sort the break-up problem!

I think the new EPG/Upgrade really needs to run on a more powerful box (which I'm sure sky have up their sleeve). These old Sky+/HD boxes were never that good anyway, now they are very flaky!

I just hope sky is going to release a 'server' type setup so I can just record in one place but access it from all the boxes around the house... at the moment it's a real pain remembering where things were recorded and then having to go to that room to watch them!! Guess I could always move the box but it's a fiddle to keep unplugging it when it could all be solved by once central recorder and a few remote satellite/player only boxes around the house! Thumbs Up

Even though it's not your problem Rob is bang on with his info. We had similar problems with our original Sky box and dish set-up. Recently though our LNB started to pack in so we got upgraded to a Sky+ and new dish (still have the old one too) which ever since we have been more than pleased with our signal. No longer cuts out in rain.

If however you get monstrously torrential rain try a bigger dish. A 60cm dish from say CPC or Maplins will cut through any interference better than the 43cm Sky Minidish.

Then again if you are convinced your box is truly a pile of festering monkey jism then one option is to phone Sky up and complain, maybe they'll upgrade you for a smaller fee than normal or maybe they can come to some other arrangement.
