Tax disc lost - can I just buy a new one?

Not quite as basic a question as it sounds ...

Ok, my bike has 5 months road tax remaining come the end of the month. Sadly I noticed yesterday the disc itself has gone AWOL off the bike!! Crying or Very sad

I know I can buy a duplicate, but I have to pay an admin fee, seems disproportional to the time the tax has left and its cost/value ... Thumbs Down ... so my question is this ... can I pay the top-up 7 months worth of tax and buy/get a NEW 12 months tax? Thinking

Anyone done this before or do the DVLA not understand/respect this sort of tight-bottom logic?!!? Laughing

DVLA + logic = Massive fail Very Happy

Don't know the answer to the question but I would just run around without the disc on until the reminder came through.

If you buy a new tax disk, you lose whatever was left on the one you have lost. AFAIK the fee for a reprint is £7.

Hi

Not sure you can online, but in a post office you probably could.

However the £7 fee is probably worthwhile for the 5 months remaining on the SV (ie, high VED). However no doubt it will take the DVLA a while to process it.

My tax was running out on 31st of july. I bought a new one on 1st of July and its "best before" date is 31st of july 2010.

Just give them a call. DVLA is pretty much nuts sometimes..

Forget about it and if questioned say it was recently stolen. You're still taxed on the database.

Its for a 250 - so £33/year ... therefore the £7 (+39p stamp Embarassed) replacement at this stage is ~50% of the 'value' of the remaining tax Sad

£7 isn't going to break the bank, but I'd rather be buying an additional quarters tax for my £7 than greasing DVLAs palm further!! ... Sad

That is not Mr PC plods concern (directly) ... you are not displaying tax, the vehicle should not be on the road simple as that ... even under the seat isn't going to prevent a fine ... get a jobsworth and you don't have a leg to stand on if it is not on display!! Sad

Bearing in mind its all done by computer these days, I really don't know why it has to be a physical disc anyway ... its a waste of paper ... you could say how come we don't have an insurance and MOT disc too??? Wink

Lack of tax is the DVLAs concern. The police will do you for failing to display if they want to feel important.

The traffic bods that pulled me over on the way to Uttoxeter last year told me that I couldn't be fined by the police for failure to display a tax disk, but they can report it to the DVLA for them to follow up on.

So when you tax a vehicle online and it takes the DVLA a week to get your tax disc to you, are you saying you shouldn't ride a bike? Laughing The police and the DVLA can swivel.

You don't need an M.O.T disc and an insurance disc as you can only get a tax disc when you have both of them.

Yep, you shouldn't be riding the bike - simple! Rolling Eyes ... also bearing in mind you could have applied for the tax several weeks before the old one is finished, time for postage is even less of an excuse that you don't have it! Wink

But I can get a tax disc with <12months MOT and Insurance left, so unless on day of purchase, it doesn't follow that if I am taxed, I am CURRENTLY MOTd and insured .. Wink

In response to the original question, you can buy a tax disc early but not online, only from the post office. You may get something of a spanish inquisition but you can do it.

I know because I did this a few weeks ago because the MOT was about to run out on my van and I wouldn't have an oppertunity to take it for one before that happened. The tax runs out at the same time as the MOT. So, it's now sat there with 12 months tax on it but no MOT until I get round to doing something about it..

Interestingly, the DVLA database doesn't seem to be able to cope with you doing this and sends out a reminder when your original tax disc would have fallen due (got the reminder a week after I bought the new tax disc). I REALLY hope they follow this with a SORN "fine" then i will have a paper trail proving the DVLA database is a load of crap.

Indeed, its not their problem OR concern ... its YOUR (ms51ves3) problem and you have to wait for it to come through before riding your bike or be liable to a £60 fine!! ... You could always go down the PO with all the p1ss smelling grannies and get one over the counter if it is that urgent!! Wink

Also a tax disc that expires 31 Dec 11, is only valid FROM 31 Dec 10 ... so getting a new one from when the old one ends but prematurely is not going to help ...

I never ride with a displayed tax disc, my holder got knocked off by the previous owner whilst offroading, and i havent bought a new one. Replaced my tax though, but it just sits in my bedroom. Police stopped me about my number plate once and gave the bike a good checkover and did not mention tax ...

If they're really that concered they can call there database (or dvla) and confirm if your taxed or not in minutes.

Do not give dvla any more cash for a replacement. If the police stop you, say that you hadn't noticed before, as mentioned earlier they can find out really quick...have you ever watched road wars ?

So you have to wait - or risk a fine!! ... simples! - there are no excuses that will wash with a jobsworth as they have you bang to rights!! Rolling Eyes

I'm a bit peeved at the cost of a new bit of paper that might never get looked at, but sadly I know if I don't get a replacement, I'll get caught ... £7.39 isn't even the cost of a tank of fuel and is better than a potential (in my case as good as guaranteed!! Sad) £60 fine! Wink

Must admit, until I checked, I thought it was £15-20 for a replacement (prolly getting confused with V5 which is £25) ... so £7 doesn't actually sting THAT much!! Smile

Technically under the 1988 Road Traffic Act you are not insured until the certificate arrives.

The charge/fine I am trying to avoid is for not displaying tax it matters not if the bike is physically taxed, they are having me coz its not on display ... and its not ... like yours ... you are risking a £60 fine ...

I'd like to think 9 out of 10 piggys would check the DB and let it slide, but it's that 1 that wont ... and its almost guaranteed that is the one I'd get!! Evil or Very Mad .. and you get bent over to the tune of £60 ... Wink
