Quote:
Under the Government scheme, members of "Shameless" families are given intensive 24-hour supervision to make sure children attend school, go to bed on time and eat proper meals.

Parents are also given help to stop them leading dysfunctional lives and to combat drug or alcohol addiction.

Around 2,000 families have gone through Family Intervention Projects, but ministers intend to increase its scope to 20,000 more in the next two years – each costing between £5,000 and £20,000.

Ministers hope expanding the scheme will reduce the number of youngster who become drawn into lives of crime because of their chaotic family lives.

The projects are operating in around half of all council areas, but Children's Secretary Ed Balls said he wanted every local authority to fund them.

"This is pretty tough and non-negotiable support for families to get to the root of the problem," he said.

"There should be Family Intervention Projects in every local authority area because every area has families that need that support."

Expanding the projects is part of moves aimed at reducing youth crime revealed in the Government's Youth Crime Action Plan.

Surely there would be a cheaper way to do this, maybe having some form of camp where they could be shipped to and rehabilitated.

Hi

Does sound like a lot of money, but not sure a "camp" wouldn't just make the problem worse. Idea appears to be to help them break out of a dysfunctional situation rather than group them together and let the worst behavior spread.

All the best

Keith

We should not get too excited about this proposal because we all know that in the real world it just isn't going to happen. Does anyone remember some of the other tough sounding proposals of recent times such as fining the parents of unruly children or marching feral youths to cash points in order to make them pay on-the-spot fines?
NuLabour ministers just talk the talk and nothing ever happens. The Childrens' Secretary has a very apt surname.

I think at first signs of delinquency, they should be rendered unable to have children. That would stop the vicious cycle perpetuating itself.*

No, I'm actually being serious...

What would you call being delinquent? the first intake of weed, first shoplifting, the first car theft? Or habitual offenders of other crimes?

Aye, Hitler set up a rather efficient solution to idiots such as these.

Don't think it would fly with the namby-pamby left wing though Thumbs Down

Third time they are reported to the childrens panel. (Three strikes.)

It can always be reversed later in life.

Thumbs Up

If there's no plan for shipping them back then there's no need for rehabilitation.
