Why in the hell would you even want to learn, it's not like everyone uses them so would be mostly pointless.

Not pointless, it means you can type faster more easily, due to the layout of the keys.

People who hold the world records for fast typing use that layout.

I dont need to break records, but it would be handy to be able to type faster.

How fast do you need/want to type?

With some practice, I can do 80wpm with the standard Qwerty layout, which is more than adequate for work and pleasure.

Why don't you try a typing program to practise and improve your speed?

i can do about 40wpm, 50wpm at a push

the qwerty layout is just a historical throwback to the days when typewriters could jam if keys near each other were pressed together

a keyboard layout designed for ease of use, may be faster with less effort, once you learn to use it

typing programs wouldnt increase my speed, just give me practise, i get plenty of practise

i like the idea of better ways of doing things, whether i will learn to use the dvorak keyboard layout is open to question, but i've moved the keys on an old keyboard, and know how to switch between normal and dvorak on the pc

there is also a left hand only dvorak layout which might be interesting too

its a geeky type thing, learning for the sake of learning with the possibility of benefit, doing things differently for the sake of it, can turn out to have real benefits sometimes

There are some things in life that I feel are geeky but are worth mastering, typing speed is not one of them.. Besides I can't see how having a different keyboard layout to that of what you are used to will improve your speed, if you can only do 40 words a minute then I don't think changing the layout will help too much.

They would, though, as they'd force you to improve your rhythm. If you ever listen to experienced typists type, you'll notice it's a very steady stream of tapping. That's what makes it fast. As soon as I developed my rhythm, my typing speed and accuracy increased dramatically.

ncrn: typing speed is actually a pretty useful skill to have. When my fellow Uni students were slowly typing up their essays, often having first drafted them in long hand, I would knock mine out in a fraction of the time.

At work, I get my reports done much faster than most because of the typing speed.

Whether Dvorak is faster is dubious anyway :-

https://www.reason.com/news/show/29944.html

I'd learn it for the novelty factor, but would rather improve my typing speed on a QWERTY keyboard. I've been using computers for 30 years now, and my typing style is pretty much an 8 finger hunt and peck. I'm sure I could raise my WPM by at least 50% if I learned to touch type.

Touch typing programs will help you learn where to place your hands/fingers so that you are hitting the keys with the minimal amount of travel and also you will not need to look at the keyboard since your fingers "know" where to travel to.

Learning to use a dvorak keyboard could be a lengthy process, since you essentially need to retrain your muscle memory and also your mental tendency to go for the keys of a qwerty keyboard.

I type pretty fast anyway, I've tried touch typing programs before but I don't like them since I'm way faster at typing out words coming from my own mind rather than reading some words on a screen and copying them, i.e when getting into a lengthy part of an essay or writing up an experiment in my own words. As mentioned though, they did help me place my fingers better so that now I don't have to look at keyboard at all, and even if I do hit a wrong letter, my fingers know whether I have to move up/down/left/right to correct the error, although if you asked me to list the keys in order I wouldn't have a clue, which I find a bit odd and amusing.

IIRC, the dvorak keyboard is layed out in a more logical fashion as to which letters normally succeed other letters and therefore the amount of travel is less, essentially resulting in small movements up and down to access all letters.

I dont type big reports, so 40-50 wpm which is what i do at the moment without much effort, is fine. I touch type, so I dont need to learn. I can agree with the idea of going for rythm.

I much prefer the idea of learning a new layout which is more effortless to type fast, rather than trying to type faster and faster, the current way.

The thing that got me thinkin about it, was the other day, I was doing a bit of typing to someone dictating, and it would have been handy to be able to type at the speed of speech.

What is the difference between touch typing and typing pretty fast while looking at the monitor?

I can type probably 50 to 60 words a minute with hardly any spelling mistakes etc. I use probably 8 of my 10 fingers/thumbs to type.

Thumbs do the keyboard depending on which is over at at the time I need to press space.

In fact I think the only finger I dont use when typing is my right hand, 3rd finger (Wedding ring finger). I am left handed.
Is this not touch typing?

And back on topic, Why on earth would you want to learn to type on a different style of keyboard. It took me years to learn how to type fast looking at the screen. Starting over would be like going back 10 - 12 years!

And what are you going to do, Carry a dvorak keyboard around with you for when you go on a mates PC? Laughing

Touch typing is when you type without looking at the keyboard. I usually tend to use my first three fingers on my left hand and left thumb for keyboard, and my my first two fingers on my right hand. Occasionally using my pinkies for reaching shift ctrl enter etc.

Agreed. Thumbs Up

Just did nick 606's test, and felt slow and clumsy, compared to usual.

92 WPM on that test with me laptop on the sofa. I score higher while typing properly. I've been officially clocked at 115 WPM over 20 minutes.

I've been using computer keyboards for over 22 years now so I've gained some serious speed skills.

I used DVORAK for 6 years. It only really improves your speed if you're a high end typist or if you've been brought up on it.

Go and do a typing course if you want more speed, and practice. Or try Typing of The Dead out.

Oh and I concur with typing of the dead, its awesome fun, and feels like you are improving an important skill at the same time in a roundabout way, instead of just blasting zombies Razz

7 mistakes means the 85 wpm doesn't count, as going back to correct mistakes, would slow down your average word count.

A 50 wpm count with no mistakes, is better than 7 mistakes in a short exercise, that will each take time to go back and fix.

well you didnt even notice that I had highlighted your quote because you had mis-spelt adequate, so high word count with errors is worse than low word count without errors

thanks this is what bcf s good for !

Where else would I find someone who had actually used DVORAK.

To be honest I havent picked up the keyboard with rearranged keys since this thread, so I doubt I will ever get into learning DVORAK stylee Smile

You never know though.

Tedious soul that you are, and wrong im afraid, unless you are using a type writer.

Spellcheck can correct such mistakes automatically in a fraction of a second, and at 85wpm I beat you to the end of a 4000 word document, by about 3 minutes.

I suck balls man, 44wpm Sad

I use computer all day as well, though its not the speed at which I type, but more the spelling of unusual words. Not typo's but just taking long to spell words.
