Hi all, I just got rid of my 125 and moved up to my first real bike. I bought the CBR 400 hoping to get a bit more reliability of of a honda than an Aprilia. I took it for a spin the other day and the bugger just cut out on me.
I took the seat cover off and the battery had seriously overcharged that it had inflated ( i was lucky it didn't blow and burn my legs ), the regulator had blown so the battery was overcharging and it also destroyed my starter solenoid. can anyone help me to understand why this might have happened and give me some directions on replacing the parts. i'm a bit skint so i cant pay £30 and hour to take it to a garage as much as i would like to get it professionally checked. I don't need anyone to tell me just take it to a garage because that's no help. I need real advice from people who know what their talking about.
please help guys Wink

CBR400's and VFR400s of that age are notorious for the reg/recs frying themselfs alive, the common solution is to get a bigger one with fins like one off a cbr600f.

The connector block on a different reg/rec unit will not be the same or have the wires in the same order but Honda use the same wire colours throughout their range. As long as you connect yellow to yellow, black to black, red to red etc, you should be fine.

If you need help with what to connect to where, ask.

For a quick and dirty check of the alternator, disconnect the reg/rec and get a multimeter set on resistance.

On the terminal block which normally connects to the reg/rec check that:

Every pair of yellows has the same resistance.
Every yellow to green has infinate resistance.

Anything different and there is a fault in the alternator.
