Going to look at one tonight, seems good from the small pics and description after a call to the owner but are there any areas/common problems in particular i should be looking out for on this type of bike?

Any help much appreciated Thumbs Up Karma

The older Kwak brakes were notorious for needing lots of TLC, other wise they would seize. Apart from that they were robust and under-rated bikes, I would do an HPI including mileage though, just to make sure it's genuine.

Cheers but meant apart from the usual stuff. Checked all those when i called and it seems like it has been fairly well maintained, recent C+S, new wheel bearings, swingarm bearings, not long ago MOT'd. For the price I'd be willing to live with a few battle scars here and there

The very earliest ZX9's were supposed to be a bit barge like in the handling department. This is partly because Kawasaki was reputed to have done its calculations on the rear suspension linkage wrongly..

I think there are kits around to sort it out though... something about different length dogbones or links or something.

Well made a cheeky offer and i am now the proud owner of ZX9R Cool

It has done a lot of miles, 49k of them to be precise but all checked out on the HPI front and apart from needing a new can and a rear tyre seems to be in good working order if a bit rough around the edges. It might well blow up/fall to pieces sooner than hoped but its MOT'd til next March so should be good fun for a few miles at least! Mr. Green

Crappy pics from the ad -

Need a bit more help already though - been looking for bits on ebay but am confused by what model code it would be? More karma waiting! Thumbs Up

That's a B1/B2 model since it's the earliest model. B3-4 models had revised suspension linkages and 6 pot brakes. Bodywork from all B models will fit etc.

Get yourself on www.zx-9r.net It's a great forum, probably the friendliest you'll find and tons of knowledge on there.

www.mcnninjas.co.uk is a pretty decent site when scouring for parts... Was pretty useful in getting parts for the 6R when i stacked it. They mite feel a bit "cliquey" but once you break into the forum, they'll be some useful tips and hits to be had.

Check the headgasket, It will fail at some point soon if it hasnt allready been done. When you run it upto temperature then switch it off water will bubble out of the expansion tank. I have Just sold mine and bought a TL1000R!

I have a load of tarty parts for sale if you are interested, ohlins suspension, double bubble screen 6 pots that will fit yours, carbon hugger and mudguard. PM me if you need anything.

And the best forum for these is www.zx-9r.net they are a great bunch of knowlageable guys.

Not heard of the head gasket being an issue normally, only the odd case due to overheating?

These engines are pretty sound and 49k isn't much really if it's been well maintained with regular oil+filter changes.
If it's been abused like hell then you'll prob only get another 20k out of it however. Laughing

Ive been a member on the zx9r forum for a year now. Including mine there have been 8 headgasket faliures on B models.

They are renown for it.

TBH they are easy to do and will cost no more than £50 if you do it yourself. for £750 you have got alot of bike. Up untill last week mine did a measured 170mph. Daily. If Id seen it I would have happily bought it at that money!

Enjoy it! If you need any advice just ask!

So... R32, how is your home in Northfield?

https://aberdeen.gumtree.com/posting_images/12/42688512__1248723521__0__3-f34f5fd387c0f6b9e8db58f2c92a20f2.__big__.jpg

Have I made you scared yet? Sad

Edit: Just noticed the price you have it up for, what do these bikes look like naked/fightered? I'm looking to chuck my 125 for a naked, but insurance on your beast would only be 200 or so quids. Will get back to you on that front.

Your gumtree skills are most impressive but hardly scary i'm afraid! Mr. Green

I considered going for a naked look after i got it back but was easier just to put it back to tatty but standard. Have seem some niceish looking ones though.

Took some decent pics of the new beast...

Firstly it made the short trip home with next to no drama. Stalled it a couple of times as clutch is a whole lot different to my previous bike. Was also going very gingerly as rear tyre is totally shafted. Getting that replaced tomorrow as well as an oil change for piece of mind. The guy had it running before i got there today so cant be any overheating issues he is aware of - didnt seem to get too hot so keep fingers crossed for now.

Only probs found so far was a rear indicator wasnt working so cleaned up the contacts and all good, the seat release doesnt appear to be working and there is a slight leak from the sump plug washer. Only have one key too so didnt want to be too rough with it. Something else to look into tomorrow! Busy day ahead, i can feel a sicky coming on!! Laughing
