Right, I made the decision to go somewhere for my next birthday... I was first thinking Peru (Maccu Picchu), but after doing a bit of research, I find out it is the wet season, and the inca trail gets closed off towards the end of January and throughout February, and whilst a bit of rain does not concern me, slithering around in mud, and being in a high altitude does. So I'm thinking it's going to be best left to another time.

So, I have a dilema...what to do...where to go...?

It needs to be somewhere spectacular, interesting (lots to explore), in January, fairly temperate weather, a place I've not been before.

What do you suggest...? Question Cool

Switzerland it might be snowy but the sights well be amazing I went there when I was 12/13 and remember it well, it was amazing.

Plenty to do and see. Nice place to walk in the hills amazing sights and the culture is nice and friendly.

Clanger, you're a well travelling lady are you not?

List out where you've been to avoid folk recommending places you've already been.

P.S I only know this because I got jealous when you said you went off backpacking in a previous thread. Evil or Very Mad

Okay then, already been to: Mumbai & Goa in India, Beijing in China, Hong Kong, most of Thailand (apart from the southern islands), Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Uluru (Ayres Rock) & Sydney & Brisbane in Australia, NZ (both islands), Los Angeles & New York & Florida in USA, Newfoundland in Canada, Paris in France, Ibiza, some parts of Turkey, Cape Town in South Africa, Tobago in the Caribbean, Bologna & Florence in Italy.

See why I need help...I have been to a lot of the places I really wanted to, and now I need more inspiration...

January is a good time to go to the Caribbean - you can explore, it's not all sunbathing. Or the other place I've been in January is Sri Lanka which is fabulous for exploring. You could link it in with Kerala (mainland Southern India) if you want to go for longer and think you'll be all over Sri Lanka too quickly.

I'll think some more........... Thinking

I have US National Parks on my mind after reading about every one on Wiki a couple of days ago!

My experience of Barbados is somewhat tainted by the fact that I went there as part of a wedding party and stayed in an all inclusive for the first and last time! The island itself is pretty and the best way I found to explore it was on horseback which was very exciting being totally reckless galloping through the sugar fields and on the beach! There was some ok seafaring stuff to be done - diving and snorkelling average, sailing and fishing good.

If I had a choice of places to go in the Caribbean I think I would try St Lucia as the terrain is more rugged and despite the tragic death of that honeymoon couple, I understand it is one of the safer islands.

However, value for money, you are better heading East, as despite the wealthy Japanese the places where the Americans tend to holiday seem to be more expensive (rip-off).

You can often combine the Maldives with a trip to Sri Lanka, as it's considered a short hop across!

Not done it, so no first hand experience, but supposed to be very lovely, albeit potentially a bit couply if you're on your own and possibly expensive, as it's marketed as such normally! Not sure whether there is a back-packing possie who would make it a little less so, but definitely worth enquiring!

Actually Borneo, Malaysia and Indonesia are on my list for longer term travel. I intend on doing them all and southern Thailand for a big chunk as I did previously.

What I am looking for is something specific, spectacular and exciting and plenty to explore and do for about 3-4 weeks.

I think I may well just be like the Queen, postpone my actual birthday until later in the year and stick with the Peru plan... Cool

Heh. My Mrs' family is from there, so yay for free holiday accommodation. Now to just find a way to afford the flights...

Also, try Prague: it's not explorable in the whole 'scaling mountains' sense, but there are some stunningly awesome nooks and crannies to find there: try and find the Shadow bar, if you can. It's a really weird bar with church pews and cushions as the only furniture, and it plays metal and drum'n'bass all the time. Oddly cool place. There's also a really good cafe in the middle of Malostranska that serves the best knight's platter I've ever eaten.

Have a root around for the little coffee shops outside of the tourist area: the city's small enough to walk across in an hour or so, but big enough to hide a lot of interesting places.

The only drawback is that it'll be winter: Czech winters can get cold. Still, Prague in the snow would look lovely...

I'm looking to spend possibly 3-4 weeks wherever I go. Europe is fine and dandy, but it's likely I'll do Barcelona, Prague, etc. over a long weekend.

Cheers for the idea though...keep them rolling in. Thumbs Up

Right peeps...I thought I'd let you know, this event has been brought forward...I am going back to India to explore the northern regions (New Delhi / Agra / Jaipur / Rajastan) and hopefully a little further afield.

I know to some of you, the idea of going to a place like this isn't your cuppa tea, but for me it's the best thing - and to be escaping over Christmas - even better. Thumbs Up

I leave in a few hours...won't be online till sometime in January!!!

Dance!

Come to Bristol and visit the suburb of Knowle West. Where a man was murdered by his own son over the matter of 43p.

Go to Kefalonia, a greek island and hire a dodgy motorbike .

Its mostly dry with dramatic scenery and challenging roads full of rockfalls crazy paved tarmac and nutters from Athens doing a round the island speed trip.

If you come back alive then you'll drive twice as well.

I'm back!!! Jet lagged...hence me being online now...

Ha ha ha, another expert on India? Very Happy

Those people who spread the word of Delhi belly are renowned for never actually having set foot there...ever...no it's totally true.
Laughing

I had a brilliant time, in fact wish I had forked out the extra cash to extend my time out there. Stepping from 38 degrees in Goa to 0 degrees last night in LHR was a bit of a body shock!!! Shocked
