How are those of you growing your own chillis getting on? I have a few Bonda Na Jacques (Habaneros) that have ripened and are very flavoursome with excellent heat and I have had a dozen or so Ring Of Fire redden so far. The Ring Of Fire are a Cayenne type, I know that some of you got free ROF seeds, I have tried eating them but the skin is very thick and IMHO they do not make good eating indeed the seed suppliers recommend drying and grinding them for use as a condiment.
If you decide to dry them I recommend splitting them lengthwise first as the thick skin keeps the moisture in even after 4 hours in the oven.

Mine look like shit because they nearly died when I potted them up into cheap compost which would appear to have almost no nitrogen in it at all. Some intensive feeding seems to have pulled them round. Lesson learned, John Innes #2 next year.

The one on the right tried to comit suicide, the weight of peppers pulled it off the windowsill. It immediately tried to ripen the ones on the broken branches but there is no heat in them, just taste like sweet peppers.

Lots of flowers on this one, hoping it's self fertile because the other two of this sort are ill and in quarantine (got some sort of fungal infection, black spots and dying leaves). If one of them flowers, I will take a flower or two over to this one.

I've got about 45 jalapeño plants, after I though my first lot I planted didn't germinate, so I planted some more... Then they all germinated and I had loads!!

They are growing quite well now, in the last week or two, the fruits have started growing quite rapidly!

As I've got so many, I'm going to pickle some for over the winter, any one reccommend the best way? I like the taste of the 'discovery' ones in the shop, done in vinegar, as they seem to be hotter than ones done in brine! What vinegar do I use? White vinegar tastes complety different to whatever they use in the jars (I know, ive drunk it!)

any advice Or tips?

I'll try and get some pics up later!

May not be humid enough. Get a spray / mister and give it a shower every so often.

Plants need food to...

I missed out on these free seeds last time. Went looking on the net and fathomed that i grew Tabasco chillis a few years back. They were on a small plant, absolute hundreds of flowers and chillis. Only small but damn hot. I picked and stored them in olive oil and it was like using volcanic larva in cooking. I think that brine or vinegar may have been a safer option.

Would like a little dabble growing some from seeds.

Can you grow them from supermarket bought chilli?

How did you all get into growing chilli plants? and how hard is it, do they require loads of looking after or are they fairly hardy?

It's easy to grow chillies, but if your growing from seed it can be quite hard. Your best off just buying some already germinated plug plants off ebay and start off like that.

You should really aim to plant seeds around feb-march so they get a good few months sunshine, if you start planting now unless you have artificial lighting and a heated greenhouse you wont get good results.

Mine i just water every other day, and when the plant starts flowering I give it a feed every 10 days.

The first of my Trinidad Scorps ripened tonight and I put them in a stir-fry ( forgot to photograph them). They have a reputation as been in the worlds top five hottest.
It is a well deserved reputation.
Normally I would plop three Scotch Bonnets in for a nice glow but this was severe. I ran with sweat and my nose streamed. Top fun and the one was a bit of a runt. Twisted Evil

I ate a whole raw Birdseye chilli last night....wasn't too bad....quite hot, but not too bad, made my throat burn abit.

How would those Habaneros compare? What about some Bhut Jolokia?

How easy are these to grow also? My Jalapenos are doing well, will see how they taste when they are ready!

The Trinidad Scorcs are serious. Whilst cooking them my face starts to burn and as you eat them the fire builds. The burn is odd as it has overtones of black pepper but the heat comes on and on and lasts a lot longer than comercialy grown peppers

I have been plagued with greenfly Sad I tried soapy water and some organic stuff but neither worked so I did this..
I went searching for ladybirds and caught about 20 then released them onto my chilli plants. This was 10 days ago, now my plants are crawling with ladybird babies chomping away on the greenfly Smile
