After a while the starter gear cover and crank cover get battered after a while by stones etc and im trying to get this bike (gsf600sy) up to scratch, is not as close to what i see as perfect
as i look at the bike there are several things that need tidying up, the covers, left and right, chain adjusters and rear axel nut (suzuki own rust attracting metal) and any ideas on how to get scratches off tank without having to respray, i was stupid and put tankbag on with stones underneath (live and learn the hard way)
now im debating whether or not to buy the covers polished mirrored, or buy the standard suzuki matt silver ones
any ideas guys?
cheers
oh and heres the pic of bike, just fitted the rack arms, plate and topbox last night Smile

I'm a big advocate for keeping things on a bike as dull as possible. Shiny stuff just gets ruined. Save it for when you're old and have a cruiser.
Also, like you said most Suzuki's have a penchant for rust, and as such shiny polished things just look out of place.

Why bother buying new engine covers? When I crashed my bike suzuki wanted £100 odd per cover which is insane pricing imo so just repaired mine with some jb weld and painted them again and now look brand spanking new. As for the tank, if you can actually feel the scratches with your finger then they are probably too deep to save so would require touching up with some paint.

Oh and don't buy polished covers as they will be an arse to keep clean and will require regular polishing.

yea, i have tried using t-cut scratch remover, its taken away the really obvious look, but still there Sad which sucks
i could get the polished for around £30 each, and as for the original, one is bout £40 and the other around £100 wich sucks

so as for tank, nothing i can really do then??gutted cos the scrtched have taken the top coat off but not the prima

Definitely......... SHINY!

One tin of Nitromors, few sheets of emery and a tube of autosol. And lots... of rubbing;

I did the wheels on my old Bandit 12 with Nitromors, wire wool & Autosol. They really looked the business until i realised how much time i had to keep putting in to keep them looking that way.
Also i think polishing the covers will only really stand out on a 1200 with the black engine.

Totally agree! Mine is to the point now where I just give it a quick wipe after a run in the rain and it looks almost as good as before. About once a fortnight I'll give it a thorough clean and polish and that keeps it looking good for the most part.

It's a '97, but doesn't look like it's 12 years old in the flesh Smile

The downpipes can take a lot of the time, but I just use Autosol and elbow grease. One tip is to keep one cloth/rag long and thin and you can stick it around each pipe and push/pull for the side you can't see, and the awkward to reach bits. But as I tend to keep them clean as much as possible, they don't need quite so much work each time.

The block I don't do much on tbh, the fins were sprayed in silver HT paint before I had it, and looks ok, and the head is heavily laquered, but one day I'm going to take it off and shine it up like the covers. And then laquer it again, as it's not so easy to clean as the covers are.

any pics of close-ups of it?interested to see how it looks
mine is the standard silver dull paint atm, but should look fine with polished cases me thinks, but the fines are a pain, im tempted to get a steamer, which i heard if you spray wd40 along the fines etc and in the hard to reach gaps, then steam it clean, that it gets all the crap out and cleans very well......not tried that yet, but tempted
do you still have the original horn??if so......is it a rust bucket?lol mine is shafted and in need of another!lol
any tips of cleaning swinging arm?i clean and scrub down as usual, but seems dull and darker grey in some areas, if that makes sense, almost like its been stained from grease, oil and tarmac!lol
cheers

Sure. Here's a couple I took before putting on the polished ones. The fins look ok, but they were in pretty good nick when I got it anyway, but you can see the lower half is slightly brighter.. that's where the HT paint was sprayed. I have actually gone through most of the fins with the Dremel and a small wire brush, but as it didn't make much difference I didn't bother doing them all.

The head looks better here than it does now, as I tried doing the same wire brush on it, but it didn't look any better as the lacquer is so thick on it. It will look best when it's been polished properly, and then re-lacquered again I think.

Sounds like that would work, but I've not tried it. I was hesitant to shine up the fins anyway tbh, as I thought it might affect the cooling - as in there'll be less surface area if they're shiny...?

It certainly *was*, but that got the wire brush and a new coat of paint too, and now looks brand new Smile

I don't know you can do much more than try t-cutting it, but if the paint under the lacquer has discoloured it'll need a repaint anyway. I intend to buy another, take it back to the metal, polish it all up nice and re-lacquer, same as the head and fins. Oh, and the same for the bottom legs of the forks too. Thumbs Up Very Happy

lol, yea i noticed the bottom legs on my forks are starting to look a wee bit batters from stones etc, not too bad atm tho
here is some piccies, excuse the lack of detail, taken from mobile camera. so you might not noticed the dirt that i need cleaning, lol
so any suggestions on how to get this beast cleaned up etc, you will see some rust about on certain parts, mainly hard to reach places, or purely because of the stooooopid suzuki metal!lol
dont laugh too much, these are just the only errors on bike Smile
these are all the parts that need touching up, cleaning and sorting out (or buying new parts)
cheers
