Im off to have my eyes tested tomorrow morning, i wear glasses all ready and have two pairs one of which are prescription sun glasses.

The chances that i need a different prescription is high but i wanted peoples opinion on react to light lenses.

I was told a while ago that they aint that good if you drive alot (which i do) as some cars have uv filters on the wind screen.

Any opinions will be greatly received, many thanks.

My dad has been wearing a variety of react a light glasses ever since I can remember and I'm 31 now. He has never said a bad word against them.

When you are in a car reactolite lens don't darken as much as when your outside in sunlight, thats cos some of the uv that makes the lens darken is absorbed by the cars windows. I use them for driving day and night and think they are great.

I thought they were ok but found out they actually go off after a period of time. Well, mine did anyway. My prescription has been static for about 10 years. Bought the reactolite lenses and after about 18 months they stopped going back to clear and had a slight tint in them. Lady at Vision Express said this was quite common but was normally when they were older. Did me half price on normal lenses as a goodwill gesture.

I personally won't have them again. I am a singular man, don't like multi-purpose things like this. Normal glasses for indoors, sunglasses for outdoors, the 2 weren't meant to be combined.

They are good, just don't expect them to work like sunglasses do.

They should last at least 2 years now... A few years ago they did not last that long, but time has moved on and they last a lot longer now.

If you only need one pair of glasses, then they are a good choice, as a all round pair. Although i would rather have a Anti Reflection coating over reactolite lenses. If i had to make a choice.

And certanly not like the adverts portray them rapidly changing and being really dark / clear.

I have had them for the last 3-4 years (for the 4 years before that they where normal lenses) I drive/ride alot and tbh I wouldn't be without them, miles better than having to cart multiple pairs around with you , especially as the weather is never correct lol. They work fine in the car for me and change from dark to light and vice versa quickly enough. The pair I have now are coming upto 2 years old (need testing again soon) and still react like they did when I bought them and defiantly still go clear.

Try disposable contact lenses. You can wear any old sunglasses then.

The problem I had with reactolite is that they take far too long to go back to normal, probably a good few minutes. Great when your in the sun but a PITA when you walk back into a building.

As stated they do work in cars, At least mine do no problem. There are different types tho so maybe the ones you had where crap ??? I have heard the reactolight ones don't like car screens but mine are transitions and are fine

They have never not worked in any car or van I have been in and yes most of the cars etc had coated screens and or slight tints. They worked when I was on the plane to.

Specsaver lenses?

Mine are specsaver. Don't work because car windscreens have UV filters.

Specsaver sell transitions, so the same lenses. Found Specsavers better than 'proper' opticians. Smile

Maybe it depends on what car you have?

I've been thinking about getting these as my second pair, for riding. I used to have prescription sunglasses but hated not being able to see in petrol stations etc. and swapping them with the helmet on is a hassle.

I don't really mind if they go permanently slightly tinted, but how long do they take to go from dark to clear? If I'm in and out of a shop before they've cleared then there's not much point ...

As said they have never failed to work. I drive alot of various diff cars from puntos to bmw's and mercs etc depends also drive various vans. never had an issue with them and my glasses. I'm not saying you dont but a blanket statement saying that they don't work in cars is just wrong.

Yes, it was poorly written. Don't expect them to work. If they do though, great. Opticians are meant to warn people that they're not guaranteed to work in cars. Sadly mine don't work in cars (Renaults, Fords & Pugs. All have athermic screens though, I think). Sad

From their website.

Quote:
Are Transitions lenses suitable for driving?
Windshields in today’s vehicles block most of the UV rays that cause Transitions lenses to activate, or darken. As a result, when worn inside a car where less UV light is present, the ability of the lenses to darken is reduced. As an eyecare professional, you may want to recommend that some patients wear a pair of polarized prescription sunglasses for driving.

I couldn't be arsed having to carry a 2nd pair of specs around anymore though. I do like the transitions. Thumbs Up

Transitions are the best reactalite lenses you can get. Get it with a Scotchguard forte coating on top for an easier to clean lens, less glare and reflections and 1 year warranty on normal scratches which is a great offer that no other company offers.

45 secs to darken and 5 mins to go completely clear. Specsavers do sell branded products but most of their staff are monkeys and don't know shit. Also they tend to fob you off with their own lenses after the dispense.

I like my react to light glasses.

contact lenses give you better peripheral vision, but glass reacting to light is very handy at reducing sun glare

Reactolite???

Like my Arse would.

They are shite at everything they claim to be good at.

Who wants to be blinded by sunlight whilst they darken or blinded by darkness until they lighten?

When 'The powers that be' get their fingers out and fix the physics on that stuff then they will be worth another 'look'.

Until then sunglasses for sun and glasses for no sun. Evil or Very Mad
