Hey,

I've been having a problem with my right ear for about 2 months now. I woke up one morning with a nasty ringing which i learnt to live with. The doctor gave me a hearing test and my hearing tested to be fine.

However a week after the hearing test in my new job as a storeman at an airport i was walking across from a hanger back to stores when they fired up one of the turbo prop engines. I must have had about 30seconds of noise in my right ear, as i blocked my left with my finger.

Ever since my right ear has felt funny, I'm convinced i cant hear out of it as well as i used to and i am scared of getting another hearing test. This problem is driving me crazy.

Has anyone else suffered a hearing loss in one ear? Do you get used to it? Will i ever feel normal again?

Cheers for any info,
Shaun.

I've been quite a bit deaf in my right ear for ages now, I can only hear about 60% of what I can hear from left... over weekend it was quite bad and down to about 20%... I haven't been to docs but I don't really notice it too much in day to day life other than phones sometimes I can't hear as I'm right handed .... should really go get a hearing test

As should you...

I've been gradually losing my hearing since childhood.

I was born with pretty normal hearing, which meant I developed normal speech sounds (so I don't sound like I'm talking underwater like some deaf people) but it's gotten worse.

As it stands I have now lost about 80-90% of normal hearing in both ears, and have hearing aids.

You get used to it. Particulary the ability to cut off nagging from 'er indoors at the crafty flick of a switch.

Go to the doctor. If it was your eyes you would be round like a fucking shot. Your ears should be the same.

I can't comment on any of the problems experienced by the people above. As said medical advice should be taken.
However noise induced hearing loss is something all motorcyclists should be aware of.

I'VE LOST A SMALL AMOUNT OF HEARING IN MY LEFT EAR AT CERTAIN FREQUENCIES, LUCKILY I HAVE TO HAVE A MEDICAL EVERY 2-4 YEARS TO CHECK EVERYTHING AND IT WAS PICKED UP QUITE EARLY ON. I USE EAR PLUGS OR MUFFS MOST OF THE TIME WHEN I'M WORKING NOW AS THERE IS A LOT OF BACKGROUND NOISE AT MY WORK.

BUT GO TO THE DOCTOR TO GET IT CHECKED OUT.

IF YOUR ON YOUR BIKE THEN MAKE SURE YOUR HELMET IS A GOOD FIT TO REDUCE WIND NOISE AND USE EARPLUGS, THE PERSONALISED ONES THAT ARE MOULDED TO FIT YOUR EAR ARE THE BEST.

I lost about 90% of my hearing in my right ear about 3 years ago. Was the end of a quiet night, just watching tv with my girlfriend, getting ready for bed and i suddenly got a ringing in it. Felt like it needed to pop but couldnt get it too.

Made appointment with the duty nurse - tried some basic naff remedies - no joy.
Saw GP - tried various things - no joy.
Sent to ear, nose and throat clinic had tests done > sent for MRI (scary thing!!) > yup "you're deaf, nothing we can do really" Sad

They reckon that there has possibly been a bleed from one of the nerves in my inner ear which basically buggered everything up. Offered me a hearing aid, for my good ear but said that they may be detrimental as the good ear starts to rely on the aid so not really worth it unless i am really struggling.

In the 3 years, have i got used to it? Well recent hearing tests for work have shown that my good ear has basically adapted to not having any back up and is now working overtime. Its a total pain trying to hold a conversation in even fairly quiet pub though - especially if i'm in the wrong seat, mostly as the hardest thing to get over is that working in mono makes it very hard to pinpoint where a sound is coming from - should see me trying to track down my mobile when it rings and i dont know where it is! Mr. Green Other than that, i just have to tilt my head towards people when speaking.

As disabilities go i guess its fairly its a fairly good one to get Laughing
