If you had the power to repeal just one law relating to bikes or to motoring in general which would it be?

If I were thinking for the greater good I would say the 50cc restriction for 16 year olds because it's just so unusable and dangerous outside anything but a town center.

but...

Being selfish that would go out of the window and I would choose the helmet law to do away with. After riding with an open face helmet on for the first time the other day I would love the choice to experience no helmet without being slapped with a fine.

So which law would you scrap?

The totalitarian decree that we must all drive on the left. Traffic would flow far better if we were able to choose which ever side of the road was the least congested.

Hi

Speed limits. Those who seriously take the mickey would still be covered by dangerous driving , etc, but this should mean only those who are dangerous are prosecuted rather than the current attempt at quantity instead of quality of prosecutions.

All the best

Insurance rules, I would allow individuals to be insured rather than individuals.

Agree with this, a blanket rule stating absolute responsibility to drive at a ''reasonable speed for the prevailing conditions/location'' is all that's required.

I think you can get policies like that in jersey?

Personally I'd remove national speed limits, I'd just set it down to judgement of the officer at the time. For example travelling at 100mph+ on a straight clear road in good weather conditions is not as dangerous as say doing 100mph+ on a bumpy twisty road when it is raining. I would however suggest that fines and points be reserved for when someone does something really stupid, or speeding in towns.

Also I would insist upon advance driving/rider courses that teach you how to control vehicles at speeds, how to control them on the motorways and so on. Perhaps not making them mandatory but allowing massive insurance drops for taking the courses..

Motorway limits. That way I wouldn't have been tugged for 105 on Thursday.

yes please. i've been riding around for about 8 months after my test and i've had a zx6r and gsx600f in that time (unrestricted) and handled them fine. but i dont know what it's like for other riders. i suppose some 17 year olds or even 18 year olds on 600 sports bikes ride like twats so who knows.

Suppose that someone with a decent amount of experience has a 5% chance of stuffing it up. Now suppose someone with stuff all experience has 5 times the chance of making a mess and crashing (figures made up). Hideously worse chances, but still 75% will manage to avoid making a mess. Hence why "I was OK" doesn't really carry much weight.

All the best

Fixed it Embarassed

Yeah not meaning requiring a trader policy or the driving/riding other car/bike extension.

Just pissed off having to have 3 seperate policies for my vehicles, when obviously I can only use one at a time.

@asdf, thats a riding other bikes extension, not the same as you being insured as an individual.

No it is me being insured as an individual. When buying the insurance they dont ask what bike you have only your name and details. My insurance disk says my name on not the reg.
