First post here so be kind.

Basically I'm starting college next year. I'm moving up country for this, Its a full time course so will wont have much time for work except the weekend, and i don't think my parents could help me as they have to pay for my sister to start college as well and look after my gran who lives at home and pay for her to go to the local care home twice a week. Sister is staying at home so its only the bus and books my parents have to buy.

Problem is only working weekends wouldn't support my rent which is £83 a week half board which is 2 meals a day for Monday-Friday but i can stay in halls at weekend which means i will have to buy food for the mornings and weekends. I cant see weekend work covering the rent. It would buy me the food though.

Is there kind of grant or benefit I can get from the government to help with this im 18 so this might help?

cheers Tom

Hi

Possibly a student loan, but depends on if the course / qualification you are doing qualifies.

Eligibility Link

All the best

Look at EMA (£30 a week, now managed by LSC who are a bunch of fucktards who WILL fuck up your payments at least on one occasion.) non means tested I believe.
Also apply for a student support grant, based on your outgoings and income (I had £250 at the end of the year just gone to cover "travel, study and equipment costs, you get to keep the full sum providing you complete the course).
ALG if you're over 19 which I know you're not...
I'll return to thise thread, kncakered

If your under 19 and based on your parent income, under £30,000 I think, you may get EMA but its means tested. I know that when I was at college they were quite tight on paying it- regularly had late payments, if you miss one lesson or are late then you wont get it for that week etc.

EMA is all down to your tutor signing the paperwork, tight tutor = no money. I mean how are the goverment gonna know if you miss a lesson. You get a £200 bonus twice a year aswell which is nice, my mate got a samurai sword, legend.
