Has anyone ever tried this as an alterntive to camping in tents or staying in hotels when touring.

Came across this site a wee while ago: https://www.couchsurfing.org and thought it might be a good idea for cheap (free) accomodation or at least something to consider.

Had a wee search through some of the foreign places I wish to travel to next year and there seems to be loads of people who speak English so plenty people to choose from (some wih loads of feedback too)

I'm sure it works fine if your fortunate enough to encounter a normal person, however you have no idea who the person is so I therfore feel this response is appropriate, unusual for me to use a picture reply...

I've got a mate doing this at the moment on a RTW backpacking trip - he seems to be doing good from his blog - in Istanbul at the moment.

Think it is more aimed at backpackers than bikers with all their gear and bikes etc.... although a bike focused one where you stay with other bikers could work out pretty good I would have thought - probably be less wacko's and have more in common with people your stopping with - and could borrow their tools etc.

Seen stuff on other websites with people saying that couchsurfing is a good for traveling on a budget, but think I'd rather stay in a tent or find somewhere cheap to stay.

From the CouchSurfing website:

General Tips
...
Consider taking a self defense course. ... CouchSurfing members also receive a 20% discount at Impact classes (taught in the US, Canada, the UK, and Israel).

That really makes you confident that CouchSurfing is a safe way to travel. Laughing
