Im probably going to look like an idiot, but this sounds to me like a garage trying to fob me off. my derbi senda is in a garage because no matter what we did we couldnt get it to run, and they said the carb was fucked, so we went to look and sure enough the carb was and thus wasnt sucking the petrol through, because its a vacum type. They also said that the generator had packed up and made fooked the cdi unit. thing is, before they took it there was a spark it just wasnt sucking the petrol through. Thing is, to me a generator sounds like an alternator, but on a car. Which is used to charge the battery right, this bike has no electric start as its the race edition so why would it have a generator? the garage the bike was originally bought off have also said this bike has no generator, so who should I belive?

Alex

your bike will have some form of generator, otherwise you would be charging the battery every few miles. The battery is not able to produce enough power on its own to fire the spark, so it mainly uses a generator coil behind the flywheel.

The power from this then goes to the CDI unit, which releases the power to the gnition coil at the right time. If the generator dies, it is unlikely it wil break the CDI unit. The only way to check is either use a multimeter, and compare the values to the haynes manual, or replace the part and see if it makes a difference.

Before you spend out on a new carb, 99.9 of the time, its a simple fix, usually an air leak or a blockage. I would get a 2nd opinion before you spend any money.

Where the vacum pipe goes into the carb, it has snapped, damaging the carb and pipe. I got a derbi dealer to check that one. What is the average price of a new generator then?
