My bike (Hornet 600 04 model) has been getting rather hot when out on rides recently, I've noticed it ever since i changed the oil, i put 10w30 in it, and now the bike seems to get rather hot, its ok if im in open roads and there is enough air but when im crusing along or in traffic, its getting very close to red. Is this normal, is 10w30 oil ok for my bike?
Cheers.

Oil should be 10w40

Hornets do run hot, mine is near to the fan cut in temp even when moving at 30ish in this heat

I read that 10w30 is recommended for hondas?
Should i change it to 10w40? or will it be ok with 10w30?

30 is thinner oil than 40 so heats up quicker, better for winter... but if your finding it running too hot you should try the 40

tbf if the bike isnt overheating, the fans coming on and its not in the red on the temp guage is it really a problem?

my road bike runs hotter than my track bike for some unknown reason but the fan still runs, temp is in the middle and there are no problems so i just accept the fact my legs get a bit warm sometimes Very Happy

Get a haynes or read one of those online haynes manuals to see the oil type, if its wrong then change it I wouldnt bother with fully synth but this is a very long argument.

I use semi synth but check it is suitable for wet clutches. Brand dosnt matter as long as it specifies for motorcycles.

I have a haynes manual, and i have also read the bikes manual it says either 10w40 or 10w30 dependant on usual running temperature.
Its also fully synthetic, is that ok to run on a hornet? I also found when checking the level the other day that its above the top line of the dipstick, is this ok?

Cheers guys, I appreciate the replies.

I think at the next oil change i will use castrol gps 10w40 semi synthetic.

no!

if its above max you need to empty some out.

recheck it though and make sure the bike is level. its amazing the difference a slight angle can make when checking levels

A lot of people recommend Halfords own make oil and just replace more regularly

Why is it a big thing if it is above the top line? what will this do? i emptied it once as it was too high, ended up emptying too much, then ended up putting too much back in and have not emptied any but i may if its going to cause problems to the bike.

Come on, why do you think the manufacturers put an upper level on the dipstick. For asthetics!

Too high can be as bad as too low.

Too high an oil pressure's not great for the engine.

Obviously if you have too much oil the oil pressure will be too high. If you drastically overfill the engine is can push out crank case seals or something (honestly not completely sure, but that's what I've heard). Usually they just chuck the excess out of the crank breather and into the airbox.

To be fair you may as well just syphone what you don't need out. It's only a two minute job with a length of pipe. (Just don't get any in your mouth, a syringe is probably safer).

Will try a bike oil next and see what the difference is
apart from a few quid

Sure they use the number of wheels as what to divide the price by...

You can get oil that isn't Halford's cheapest?! The deal was sweetened when they started giving me free screwdrivers with it.

I've heard fully synth isn't great for hornets, I did some online research when changing the oil on a friends hornet.
