I'm fully comp and insured to ride any bike 3rd party... my sister has got a YZFR 125 with L plates on.

If she was to follow me to a bike place were my bike needs some work, could I ride her bike back with her on the back?

If you took the l-plates off and have pillion cover, you should be covered 3rd party with her on the back yes.

Me and my dad used to do that all the time. We just took some paper to tape over the L-plates.

As long as you have pillion cover and find some way to blank the 'L' plates, yep. Smile

Do the L plates have to be removed?

As in, what would happen if they police pulled me with them on?

Just pointing out that one has nothing to do with the other. You can be fully comprehensive and have no riding other bikes clause, or you can be third party only and have riding other bikes.

Common misconception is that if you're fully comprehensive, you automatically get riding other vehicles.

I specifically asked them the question when I took it out, does it cover me to ride other bikes 3rd party and they said yes.

I just checked my insurance documents and it says "Does the policy cover riding/driving other vehicles? Yes"

I remember when i took my cbt, there was two of us taking the cbt and when we had done the off-road work the instructor took us back to the owners place to collect his bike with me riding as pillion on the l-plateed 125. he didnt cover the l-plates up and said that he didnt need to as he held a full licence, even though it was showing l-plated.

its the same as a driving instructor in a car, driving between clients he doesnt cover all the L-plates up but he is fully legal tpo be in the car on his own surely?

It is technically an offence to drive/ride with L plates if only one person is driving i.e. not a learner. With cars the police won't blink an eye as after all they know it's a pain to keep removing and attaching the L plates. However on a bike a learner is not allowed to carry pillions so the sight of a small L-plated bike going down the road with a pillion might get you pulled over.

If so dismount, be polite and take your helmet off and i'm sure you will be ok once they understand it's only a quick one-off affair. However keep in mind it's technically 3 points PER L plate so probably best to cover them up with a bit of duck tape. (WD40 quickly removes the glue residue after)

I've also got riding other bikes on my TPO policy, but it says the bike must be over 350cc. Any ideas why this is?

Sounds like a Norwich union policy. If it is it means your bike your bike, the one listed on the insurance has to be over 350cc.
