I finally got my act together and headed oop North last week. Thoughts? I'm not sure why I waited so long. The scenery was stunning, the roads were brilliant (and empty) and I could soon get used to riding my bike all day every day.

No big write-up, but I did take a few pics. For one or two I even managed to keep the bike out of shot. Shifty

Nice pictures mate, but Scotland is a country not a city*. Where abouts did you go?

*Englanders always neglect to say whereabouts in Scotland, as if twas all the same.

I'm just being lazy - no need to get nationalistic on me. Here's my route. If I were doing it again I'd avoid the A9 and head up/back via the north west coastal road instead, but the rest of it was pretty much spot on given the limited amount of time I had.

The Cairngorms seemed like they'd be pretty much heaven for quick road rides. Loads of visibility, elevation changes, switchbacks, the lot. Unfortunately I did see the aftermath of a ZX6 being binned at one point, but it looked like the rider was okay (I'd have stopped but the rozzers had already shown up and it was past the point where I could've been any use).

I'm torn but I think my favourite roads were the single track ones in the far North. Not so great for hooning, but I was taking it fairly easy so that didn't really matter. I bloody loved being able to ride along and see no cars for 10-15 mins at a time. Bumped into a guy on a BMW at one point who was heading in the other direction and had the conversation "How far 'til you get to a proper road that way?" "About 15 miles, how far that way?" "About 15 miles" "... So this is the middle of nowhere then". Very Happy

I see from your map you were up Lochcarron way, did you go over the Bealach na ba road to Applecross?

Looks like a good route and the bike would be great on some of those roads.

I did and it was erm, shall we say 'memorable'. It was a nice and clear at the bottom, but as soon as soon as I started to head up I was in torrential rain and some pretty vicious wind. I stopped about half way to put my waterproofs on (by which time I was already soaked through) and it took about 5 minutes to get them on as it was so windy. At one point I could see the two cars that were in front of me and nothing else, the visibility was that bad. Look to the left, grey, look to the right, grey. I thought I might get caught out on some of the hairpins but got to the top in the end, albeit doing no more than 15mph all the way. As I started to head north along the coast road the weather cleared up and it returned to being a beautiful day.

So yeah, I did it, but I didn't actually see any of it, so will have to do it again. Laughing
