My front left disc got bent when my bike hit a car and I am looking to see if I can get a cheap honda second hand one off ebay.

I'm under the impression that any FX/FY disc will fit, does anyone know how I can tell if an earlier or later model disc will also fit/be suitable?

Thanks.

FX onwards is the same bike.

The earlier bike is completely different so chances are they wouldn't fit.

I've not found an FX one yet, and the newer ones look different.

Does anyone know if it's possible to straighten a disc? For example with some sort of engineering press?

Thanks.

Unlikely given the necessary tolerance.

I have just replaced one that was out by probably a tenth of a millimeter and it felt horrible

I can't say I notice it at the moment, it was worse , my dad straightened it with a hammer and block of wood, I get no pulsing through the lever, but when spinning the wheel you can hear the brake rubbing and it's not as free as it should be.

Maybe I'm just too sensitive Smile

Does it not feel like the road suddenly gets a lot bumpier when you're using the front brake?

Perhaps having twin discs - and one of them still straight - lessens the effect.

If you don't notice it and you can still stop, save up for new one.

After a ride, the left disc is slightly warmer than the right. Immediately after it bent I had no front brake pressure but its a lot straighter now.

One thing I will check again is how the wheel spins with the left caliper removed, because I guess it's entirely possible it may still not spin as free as it should.

It sounds like you've got nothing to worry about.

Provided the disc isn't burning hot after only gentle braking then the slight increase in drag isn't going to cause any trouble.

If there are no (perceptible) symptoms of juddering or loss of braking power then leave it - a second hand item may actually make things worse!

OK - should have qualified it a abit more..

..assuming it was a gentle bend with no areas of high stress (e.g. creases). Sounds like it as any crease would have introduced a definite judder impossible to remove with a block of wood.

..and the braking force is radial, not in the direction of the damage

.. and come to think of it, I should probably have kept my mouth shut and stop applying logic before common sense. Sorry! Embarassed
