a friend of mine just gave me a 78' honda cb125s that's been sitting around. I want to get the bike started but I do not know any knowledge of motorcycles. Here are some pics.

https://s117.photobucket.com/albums/o73/supremexneighborhood619/

I know that the Engine/tranny/carburetor airbox is there. But I do not know what else is needed to get the thing started. As far as aesthetics go, I am not concerned right now.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks.

This:

Is not what I was expecting to see under the left engine cover of a small honda. Is all that big square bit of metal and the coil on top of it attached to the bike?

Any chance of a closer picture of that bit?

Thanks for the reply. Here's what I can do. Help me understand what that is please. I know there's supposed to be an alternator there instead.

It looks to me like someone has retro-fitted a magneto off something. I have no idea what.

It looks like a real lash-up but equally, would have taken a fair degree of knowledge and skill to do.

It ought to have a rotating magnet type alternator with a magnetic flywheel mounted on the crank and a series of coils mounted inside the missing crankcase cover. Like this:

I'm no expert on magnetos, it looks to me what you have there is a magneto/dynamo, possibly home made, with a built in ignition coil. I can make out a carbon brush, what looks like a big chunky ignition coil and a condenser for the points. I have no idea how it works or is arranged but it certainly isn't standard. I'd imagine the rest of the electrics will have been substantially rearranged in order to make it run on this setup.

Yea that's strange. The thing is that I have no idea about how to wire this thing either, plus no motorcycle knowledge. the ignition coil is still under the seat. Do you think I could possibly remove this and put a standard alternator on it?Thank you very much for your help.

Probably, but you'd need pretty much all of the parts on the diagram I posted and I suspect the end of the crank has been modified somehow. I can't tell from the picture if this is permanant or not. The wiring will almost certainly also have been modified.

So in answer to your question. Yes, but with a degree of difficulty and cost that may make it not worth your while.

The other option is to see if it is making a spark and generating electricity. As I said, it would take a fair degree of expertise to do what appears to have been done. There is a fairly good chance it works. It might need a charged battery in order to work depending on what is inside that big square bit.

Try fitting a charged battery to it and connecting a sparkplug to the plug cap with the end of the plug touching the engine then kick it over and see if you get a spark.

I took the thing apart and found a rotor inside without a stator. I was just wondering, how would connect the battery to this? Thanks for your help.

I'll hold my hands up and say I've reached the limit of my knowledge here. I could probably fiddle my way round it if it was mine and was in front of me but I'm somewhat out of my depth to be advising someone what to do over the internet.

WTF is that home made alternator all about!??! that is majorly Cool

Anyhoo, if the main ignition coil is still there (under the tank) and it has the condenser still attached to it too, then all you need to do is connect the green wire from the points (in pic below dangling) to the blue wire on the coil and put permanent 6v to the Black wire on the coil (obviously need the -ve of the battery to the frame). That'll give you a working ignition.

Once it is all running, you can see if that abomination actually produces any electricity for the lights and battery charging!
