Saw this story on our local news tonight......

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/gloucestershire/8191355.stm

I say it serves the cat owners right for letting their cat wander in other peoples gardens.

It's what cat's do, they're not obedient and can't be trained like dogs, they will wander unless you lock them in the house all their life. I'd be more concerned about the fact there was a Python loose in the neighbours' garden..?

Chaanging the dangerous animals act is just the usual overeactive nonsense people do to try and get their 15minutes of fame by being a national pain in the ass, just get the guy to keep his snake inside.

No they cant be trained like dogs, and they have the ability to get into other people gardens over high fences and walls.
Even more reason why cats should be kept under control by their owners. You dont see expensive pedigree cats like Persians and Siamese wondering free around the neighbourhood. This is because the owners of these expensive cats make sure they cant get out and no harm comes to them. Ordinary moggs are just booted out of the house to roam free.
If a cat enters my garden, my dog will most certainly kill it if he catches it. Is this my fault, or the fault of my dog ?

Unlucky cat, but don't see the point in adding them to the Dangerous Animals legislation, they're not really a threat to humans.

The snake was on the snake owners property, its not as if the snake was eating pets in someone elses garden.
The cat being eaten was totally the responsibility of the cats owners, if they hadn't let it roam free in the first place it wouldn't have happened.

Hahahahahha!

"kept under control by their owners." Oh yeah because cats are so annoying, I caught one graffiting on my garden fence and the other day there was a small group binge drinking at the end of my road!!Rolling Eyes

Do you have some irrational hatred for cats or something? In most other European countries they are not domesticated pets and are free to rome the streets and spread disease, thankfully in the UK they have been domesticated and are not a pest (not that stray cats in other countries bother me!).

The reason you don't see expensive pedigree cats roaming the streets is because they would get stolen because of their high value you numpty! What's so wrong with a cat taking a stroll in your garden? Sure your dog may try to kill it, but I think most cats will be able to stay out of an angry dogs way.

As for the snake, what if young child had kicked his football over into that garden, gone to collect it and been bitten by the snake? I think 'most' people tend to keep snakes as a macho symbol as they seem like very dull pets, but each to their own...

Ok all cat owners should keep their cats on their own property and not let them roam free because they are such a hazard... This means all dog owners are never allowed to let their dogs off the lead when out walking as they will be 'roaming free' Rolling Eyes FFS!!

If a cat owner allows its cat to wander free, then that owner cant complain when harm comes to that cat. Cats get run over, killed by dogs.... or in this case eaten by a snake.
If i let my dog roam free it would likely be shot by a farmer as i'm surrounded by farmland. This would be my fault for being irresponsible, you cant blame the farmer.
Similarly you cant blame the snake or the snake owner for this cats death, the responsibility lies totally with the cat owners for not looking after their pet.

I agree, but it depends on how the cat was harmed.

I also think people should not let their pet snake out into a garden unsupervised.

That is why I said 'most'. I'm sure there are plenty of people who really like their reptiles, but from my experience all the snake owners I'v come across bar one have been your drug dealer/older chav type of person. They have no real interest in the snake apart from the from filming it eat mice and using it as some sort of weapon....

Well I have a one friend who keeps two snakes because he likes them, other then that I have come across 3 other people who keep them through work and friends of friends, they all fall into the chav category...

I also see/hear frequent stories on the news regarding people who have bought snakes and can't handle them, I remember one recently about a chap keeping 8 foot Python in a cupboard in his flat!! On monday their was another different story about a gang using a snake as a weapon..

Should it not be judged in line with what's reasonable?

Cats roam around normally without any problems, (for the most part.) Ok, they might get ran over by a car, that comes under reasonable risk. But to be consumed by a four metre python in a suburban garden I don't think can be described as a reasonable every day risk. It is after all a pretty serious predator, (as opossed to a poorly driven nissan micra for example.)

I think the snake owner should probably make some form of reparation to the cat owners. No idea in what form, at the very least an apology should be forth-coming.

Definitely gives one paws for thought though... They should add a claws in to the existing law... I hope the owners are feline better now...

Ummm

Nope, that's all I've got.

Ok, so lets say a child climbed into your garden, and your cat attacked it, or dog, and the child got inured, maybe lost an eye...

Shall we add them to the dangerous animals list?

What about a german shepherd, that could kill a human...how small does a dog have to be before it's 'dangerous'?

'Constrictor' snakes, covers pretty much all of them. Some can be found in this country, in the wild...and couldn't even constrict a finger to death.

Banning stuff, outlawing this and that is what is ruining this country, you are all bikers on here, you know this. Just because you don't have reptiles or snakes as pets, doesn't mean other people don't value them just as much as any cat or dog owner.

If I owned a reticulated python (I don't - they are the longest snake you can physically get btw) and I wanted to let it into my garden, knowing it couldn't escape, why should it be a problem if it did attack another animal or person, I'm sure a great many dogs would react the same way!

Basically, what I'm trying to say, is don't be so stupid moaning about 'banning' more stuff, open your eyes to other peoples interests!

No one is saying ban anything?

But having a big aggressive dog in you garden is a bit different to having a big snake... A dog is slightly more obvious then a 8 foot python in some grass. Frankly anyone who decides they can let their snake roam the garden unsupervised should not be able to keep such a pet.

Well if a dog is a danger to the public it will usually be put down Wink

(My girlfriends Jack Russel is on the dangerous dogs list Laughing )

Why should anyone be in my backgarden? It's my property, if you need to go into it, come and ask.

I may be some sort of nutter who's electrified the floor for giggles, or planted blanks around to stop theives getting into my garden.

If the snake 100% can't get out, I don't see the problem. (The problem is theres pretty much no 100% way of blocking a snake in somewhere, they are unbeliveable escape artists).

And the 'banning' part wasn't aimed at you, it was the couple who's cat got eaten, stating that all 'constricting' snakes should be on the dangerous animals list.

I don't think these people realise just how prevalent reptiles are as pets.

And just for the record I wouldn't ever have any reptiles in my garden, as there's just no way to keep them enclosed well enough...and the weathers too rubbish over here for them anyway!

Snake meet shovel, shovel meet snake, shovel dig hole to put dead snake in.
I hate snakes. There is just something wrong with snakes, they are just a wrong creature. Evolution should have stood on the little bastards.

After reading AG's post I now have the mental imagery of a German Shepherd on tip toes sneaking across the back lawn quietly giggling evily into a cape in anticipation of pouncing on an unsuspecting visitor.

One assumes a large dog would bark thus hinting at its presence giving any would-be interloper second thoughts.

I don't think snakes should be banned, but if a person can't look after a one responsibly (as in this case) then maybe a verbal warning isn't enough. Perhaps being ordered to make a hefty donation to the RSPCA and an apology to the cat owners would suffice.

Thumbs Up
