Guys,

Need a little advice. I own a 2001 NSR125R (UK bike) and have just changed the indicators from standard to Oxford Products Micro.

The fitting has gone well, but the indicators do not flash correctly.

If one indicator is connected only, it flashes ok. If two are connected, the relay groans like hell and nothing happens.

I believe the bulb wattage is slightly higher on the new indicators, hence the problem with the relay.

My question is...does anyone know of a relay that can just plug straight in with no messing about that can cope with a higher wattage?

Reg's,

Rob.

PS - The new indicators look the dogs...just need a smaller plate at the arse end for best effect

could even try Halfrauds

However, it may be easier to change the bulbs in the rear two indicators or front to so that the resistance from the bulbs is the same as what it was before.

I dont know the ratings that you will need off the top of my head, however this has been discussed here before, trying doing a search.

could be something like 5W bulbs (there again this may be totally out)

G or someone will let you know know doubt, getting bulbs will probably be easier than getting a new relay

relay it is.

bulbs were 10w, now 20w, so double the power going through the relay.

to change the bulbs would be a pain in the arse, since the relay is exposed anyway (most of fairing off now), although i agree keeping it the same is a good idea.

One thing i do like about the bulbs is they are much brighter..i.e. safer than they used to be (since i had a bad car accident last year, i like the idea of this!)

Hex,

Just spoke to a chap i know in the AA.

It seems dead easy. Most relays are two or three pin, Honda tend to use three pin ( i haven't checked this on the bike as yet).

The plan is to pop to a local motor factors place, tell them the wattage and voltage (2 x 20w bulbs + 12 Volt) and hey presto, out pops a relay!

If its as simple as thet, i'll post another reply.

Rob.

Oh I know how easy a relay is to replace, they are standard pin outs so you can pick on eup and simply replace the current one with it.

not a difficult job at all, was just offering the sugestion that a coupld of new bulbs would be cheaper for you

I had thought about taking the original bulbs out the old indicators (not sure if they would fit), however as I dropped the bike and only had three indicators left...I needed to buy bulbs. Suggestions are the relay is only about a fiver...couple a quid more than bulbs I suppose, but perhaps worth it for safety in the long run.

Thanks again for your advice mate.

Speak soon,

Rob.

Indicator relay.

Or just change the bulbs inside them to 10watt bulbs.

Guys,

To0 clear up the problem...

12volt mini flasher relay works when increasing the wattage of the indicators. This can be double sided sticky taped to the same place as the original.

The indicators used were Oxford Products Micro (arrow shape), improve the lines of the bike, better than the standard coathangers that were there.

All in all, working well,

RJ

did you ever resolve this problem RJ? i went down to the new Hien Gericke in Darlington the other day for some replacement blinkers. I bought one set that didn't work (same problem as you, groaning relay). took them back and got a credit note, they don't seem to do replacements with the same wattage bulb as the original honda 'coat hangers'. The bulbs in the new blinkers where orange, where does anyone get replacement ORANGE bulbs (the lense is clear - so needs coloured bulbs)

did you replace your relay in the end or where did you get the replacement bulbs from.

hello,

got it sorted.

problem was dodgy battery and i changed the relay. go for a standard old shape mini relay, it has the capacity to handle the higher wattage winkers.

hein gerricke supplied the winkers (oxford products arrows) and m local motor factors shop supled the relay. only problem you will have is fixing the relay to the bike. i used velcro, as the stndard relay has a plastic clip that fits the bike, no probs with it though!

Varta supplied the battery, my fault, bent the plates inside it.

So, the relay in at the moment will not handle the 12V 21w indicators.

If i buy the same indicators from Hein Gericke, i just need to replace the relay?

Have you still got the specs for the relay you bought (and if possible, a web address)?

Your local halfords should stock them (relays that is!). Just a standard flasher unit - they have all sorts of wattages available. You could also just buy replacement bulbs (10W) from maplin or halfords or somewhere.
