Hey, so been told i broke ribs but dont know how many. Have attatched a large picture, would appreciate if somone with any med experience could clear it up for me

SavageKymco - Can you feel your screws through the skin? I can feel the screws thats holding my rod in my tibia, its quite amusing

(on the xray of the femur, there are another 2 screws at the top that you can't see )

I can feel the screws too- as well as the holes where the screws used to be
I broke my tib and fib 7yrs ago- initially had 7 screws and a plate put in, had them taken out and now got 2 new screws in my ankle- 5 operations later and it still is buggered lol

I'm due to have all my metal work taken out soon. Went to see my consultant end of july and he wanted to do the op in 3 months time, i thought that was to early (accident was only 20th june 2008). So im going back to see him in 3 months (well about 2 now) and then he is doing the op 3 month after that.

Before i go into theatre i'm going to crack a deal with him, i will only let them do the surgery provided i get to keep all the metal

So how come you had to have some screws put in after having the plate and screws taken out?

They originally aimed to keep all of the metal work in but as I was 13 (horses lol ) when it happened I was still growing, so as I grew, the screws were coming out too.

I started having it all taken out about 9 months after it happened- it did initially heal fine but after they took everything out it just wouldnt grow bone back in the holes for some reason, which I think is why it has led to the problems with it now.

Just make sure that your surgeon is happy with it before he discharges you after your next operation, and of course, good luck

Well my surgeon's words were 'I have never seen a leg so badly damaged that still looks sort of like a leg once its been repaired'. He also had doubt in me even walking again, nevermind walking around like nothing has happened

I'm surprised he even wants to take the metal out. Last time i was at the fracture clinic (been about 6 or 7 times now ) i just asked him if he generally takes them out or just leaves them in. He said that as i am only 20 (was a week short of 19 when it happened) he would prefer to take them out as it can cause problems in the future, nevermind if i brake my leg again (can cause spiral/helical fractures which are very complicated to fix).

Obviously it was my choice, hence why he sent me on my way to think about it and we are going to discuss it next time i see him.

My surgeon is absolutley brilliant (specialises in sports injuries) and i have no doubts in him what so ever. So whatever he says, i can trust that it is true. So he wouldn't let me go unless he was entirely sure i was ready to go. I did spend 23 1/2 ish hours in theatre, around half of them under his knife so he knows his way around my body so i should be fine. But thanks anyway

Im glad to hear you were so lucky! Was it bike related?
I think I was just unfortunate with the break I did- its even been researched that the prognosis long term is poor for the type of fracture. The most recent op was an arthrodesis, or fusion, as Im too young for a joint replacement as they dont last long in younger people But hey ho, pain killers are my friends lol

Yep, came off my bike june last year. Went into a left hand bend, got a tank slapper and went wide. Managed to hold it but tried to crank it over further to get back on my side of the road and low sided....unfortunatley at the same time as a car was coming the other way

On saying that, that is what i have pieced together from what the boys in blue have told me. Despite being total concious throughout it all, i don't remember a thing (ketamine is bloody awesome

thanks for all the input! never broken ribs before was told that i broke a fair few, some twice. There were also bilateral pneumothoraces, altough i cant make them out in that. have another where you can see the chest drains which is weird. Think they must have broken against the front fairing/clocks/etc.

got the pics from the consultant, he just emailed me them.

Nice ball bags!

A pneumo is depicted by air, ie black on the xray. Look at the right hand side (your left in real life) and you'll see a clear and crisp black, almost clear in comparison area to the rest of the lung field.

Fractured ribs, sometimes easy to spot. Follow each rib margin from one end to another and look for any deviations or 'cracks' in their structure.
