I was gonna put up a load of poll options but there`s too many variables in this topic so i`ll just leave it open to interpretation..

When you head out on your bike what state is your mind in?how do you expect to get where you`re going ?what`s the journey all about to you?etc etc etc??????

With the exception of my excessive speed i`m definately of the defensive/pre-emptive mentality to biking.
Everytime i`m out on the roads i`m always considering where the potential hazards are and what could go wrong before i start a manouevre or begin an action .The fun freedom and crazyness comes 2nd to me.

so basically i always expect the unexpected and i never let my guard down.I`m on the edge of paranoia about crashing tbh but not quite to the point where it takes the pleasure out of riding (yet).

what about you?

Have fun, do what you feel at the time. Regret it when you're on your back in hospital.

No.. Really Very Happy

I can't ride slowly. I HAVE to over take cars, it's almost like an OCD. Doesn't really depend on my mood either. I can be in the same mood as I was the day before but just think, "I'm gonna ride like a nutta" for no reason.

I don't think about crashing at all, I'm more paranoid about getting clocked by the police than anything else.

Agree with this.

I find myself always wanting to be at the front but always stuck behind some cars, this obviously means i am going fast.

Someone at work said they did IAM and it struck him when the guy said 'are you always the one behind the cars' just how fast he drives. I am exactly the same, except i haven't done my IAM yet (got to do it for work) but i presume i will get told the same.

Fairly sedate on the road. Slower than I'd like on the track.

Start out every comute to work thinking, Ill take it steady and relax....
As soon as i get to the 3 lane road, or get overtaken Rolling Eyes that flys off behind me and its chocks away.....

I then take it easy in the 40/30 limits, no choice as too many speed cams.

I hate being behind cars, but I don't ride excessively fast ( well except for one bit of road near Kirkby Lonsdale).

I always set out to just enjoy the journey and am always on my guard for cars pulling out, tractors etc around the next bend.
I expect to reach my destination in 1 piece with no major mishaps, no matter how long it takes.

Depends how late i am for work. I can some days ride in 30minutes if i wake up on time. If not i can probally make it in 10 miuntes. Laughing

But normally I ride fast but its always safe to do so.

But i make it my mission to get to the front of every traffic lights Thumbs Up

Too quick in a 30 zone and still a bit wobbly on corners. Getting better though and a bit of confidence in what you're doing goes a loooong way in biking (like most things in life really) Wink

Do struggle to keep to speed limits though, possibly to do with gearing. Got a 14 tooth front sprocket on now and it means it's happy in 2nd doing about 30. Prior to that it'd be lugging around or nearly stalling. 3rd is still too low at 30.

Personally don't think I'm a quick rider but do like to get away from lights first. Not that bothered about aggressive filtering but will do it if I have to. I have to drive for work and traffic doesn't fuss me - I'm still getting paid for it so will happily sit and listen to radio all day. Laughing

I'm pretty much put to shame by fast riders though Embarassed

I've only just started riding and i've come to it late, I passed my DAS in March and bought my first roadworthy bike last weekend.. sofar i've come to the following conclusion:

I can't ride for shit Very Happy

seriously, I may have somehow persuaded some random dude on a drizzly March lunchtime in Wolverhampton that I could, but I haven't got a fecking clue.

I've had a week with the bike now and managed 50 miles, i'm not using it for transport and i've been away a lot this week with work, and sofar i've worked out that the cb500 I did the test on is a piss easy bike to ride in comparison to a GPZ..

I'd be prepared to swear that the Z is at least 11 feet long, it feels like i'm lying flat over the top of it, the clutch is like a bloody lightswitch, I keep getting my right foot stuck under the brake lever.. and i gave it some throttle today and nearly fell off the back Shocked

still, taking all that into account.. I will get better and i'm bloody loving it Very Happy

i pretty much spend all my time worrying about scamera's and coppers, but refuse to ride 'sensibly', for me that's not what biking's all about, biking is about being one of the fastest and coolest things on the road so i like to go fast everywhere then tell myself off for doing it, then repeat until i get bored Laughing

I used to be all "Urban Warrior Princess" on the Super Tenere, revving, growling and shouting at cars.

Now I'm more like Urban Granny Warrior Laughing waving my walking stick Laughing

But I like to give it large getting to the front of the traffic by fair means or foul ... but not racing off at the lights like the boy racers. I like to muscle my way to the front in front of peds and bicycles (but not bother with boys on R1s or whatever) and sit there in the bicycle box waiting for the light to go green, as if I own the traffic.

I hate using the left-hand bicycle lanes (which I feel certain must not only be actually illegal, but also extremely stupid/dangerous) - but I noticed these days that a LOT of riders use them. I try to filter down the centre of traffic rather than use them.

I try to ride really aware of other traffic, and even last week had to text a mate and apologise for blanking him, as I only just noticed him as I saw him waving and then the wriring on side of his van as I sailed past, LOL.

But in general I ride
* slower than everyone else
* probably in everyone else's way
* still way more defensively than I used to Sad

And I HATE riding with other people. I hate having to see where they're going/keep up/slow down/worry about them and the traffic as well as myself/what direction?/where's the next turning we have to take?

I'd rather ride totally on my own.

I actually obey rules and respect other bikers. If I see a biker in my mirror, I simply give way thinking he might be in a hurry. If a car driver is in a hurry, who cares. Get a bike for faster transportation Smile
If there is a filtering opportunity, I never refuse it Mr. Green
When I was 20-25ish, I was a total twat.

Hellkat, slow? You were plenty bloody assertive going down Prince Regent Lane when I met you... Very Happy
Before you get all stroppy MinhDinh - that is the name of a road, and not some kind of perverse slang, you filthy person Laughing

I have to admit, I tend to ride defensively, in that I reckon every fucker's out to get me, because in Newham, they are, as a rule. I'm pretty sure that hellkat will attest to the sheer rubbish mentalness of the drivers around here.

However, I do love a good overtake, and at the moment, although the torque curve's quite comprehensively buggered by the addition of temporary K&N knockoff air filters, I love the sound the Bandit makes around 7K - as such, I'll happily rip away from the lights, just to hear it, and to know that corporal buttmonkey in his bodykitted Corsa will hear it and weep. God bless induction noise. And Micron exhausts. Very Happy

I'm still relatively new to biking (less than 3,000 miles under my belt). I'm a relaxed rider... Planted and comfy. On a nice stretch of road, when I get the urge, I try and push my limits on the bike, but on the whole I just enjoy being out of the cage... Basking in the freedom that only 2 wheels can give you! Cool

I'm slow really slow in the car, wife even moans at me about it, even had some road rage incident with some fool telling me to go quicker. (I was turning off the motorway on the left hand lane doing about 60)

On the bike though, its like i'm a different person. Some years, I've never been overtaken, i've crashed, I've fallen off, i've done speeds that are ....

Got freaked out on Saturday, when I saw some old boy up Settle way was videoing the road i'd just been on.

Thinking about it later, I was riding towards him.

I seem to have lost interest in road riding, I prated about on my 350 on a field after her rebuild but in all honesty could not be bothered in taking her on the road.
I love the track, my Badger is ready to kill me this weekend at Swindon.
