Hi

Things not great with me at the moment. Lost my job a few months ago, so was unemployed for a period of time. Just started a new job, really dislike it. Had to take a massive paycut, but it's work I suppose.

Split up with the g/f about a week ago. We weren't happy anymore, even though I still love her to bits, people change I suppose, and it just wasn't working.

Live at home still. That's shit, too.

I am seriously considering getting away for a while. A year maybe. My brother went to Australia for 18 months at my age and enjoyed it. I fugure I'm probably in the best position to go that I will ever be in. I'd have to sell my bikes, but they're only material. I want to properly race, but I can do that at any point in my life when in a better paid job.

I'm after advice really, on what to do. My head isn't in the best place at the moment, and I feel like I want to get away, and see a few things.

Have any of you lot gone to Aus/NZ backpacking etc?

Do you regret any of it?

Thanks.

Been advised against going with anyone else by several people that have done it before. If I go it alone i expect it will be a good character building exercise, and I can do whatever I want to do.

Probably buy a bike.

I went backpacking for a year in 05-06 don't regret any of it apart from coming back Smile Was the best year of my life so far.

I just went to the normal backpacker locations US,NZ,OZ and a bit of SE Asia.
Got workin visas for Nz and Oz.

I went with two mates but one of them had an on-off girlfriend at the time and came back after a few months as he wanted to give it another go, so that might be something to think about if you and your ex girlfriend still have feelings for each other.

I got on pretty well with my other mate, little things start to get on your nerves about people though when you're spending 24 hours a day with them, so if he was getting on my nerves too much I used to have to go for a walk or something for a couple of hours to calm down. His actually moved to New Zealand permantly now.

You'd probably gain a little more as you'd make more of an effort to meet people if you were traveling on your own.
Staying in hostels and everybody is in the same boat so its very easy to make friends. I stayed at the same hostel for a few months in Brisbane and some nights there were over 20 of us sitting around getting drunk. Happy days Razz

But when you get off the normal backpackers track things might get a little lonely on your own.

Wouldn't really say it changed my life or anything but it was just a really great year where I saw some amazing things and met some great people.

i went travelling from the age of 24 to 28 best thing i ever did, made me realise what was important, not much Smile mistake number 1 coming back actaully cant say that came home met a good bird and all settled down now i'm 35 life can pass you by.

There are loads of people doing the same thing over in oz etc going on your own is no big thing, i remember arriving at sydney airport at 6am after a 24hr flight stopping in LA for 2 hours..... on my own no where to say and thinking WTF am i doing here lol it was the start off something special, for the first time i was choosing life, no worries no regrets and a life in a bag they were truely great days, and i mean that. if your thinking about maybe its time to scratch that itch and just do it.

I had a great time in Oz, but had family and friends over there.

I wouldn't like to do it without any back-up, but that's me.

I came back regretting that I had given up a first job with real promise to get pissed for a year.

Have you thought about pissing off around the UK/R.O.I or Europe? There isn't a great deal to Australia, Europe is on your doorstep and more diverse.

Well, Garth I can tell you, I went backpacking ALONE for 9 months through 05-06. Starting off in India and going through SEAsia, Oz and NZ and NY.

I absolutely loved it!!! It was totally brilliant in the fact that I could do anything of my pleasing, without having to check with anyone else. That said, there were some moments where I wished I had someone to share certain aspects of it...for example standing on the Great Wall of China, and getting to Angkor Wat on my birthday.
It was the WOW moments, I wished I could have shared.

Meeting fellow travellers is way too easy, in fact, if you go the usual places, stay in the usual hostels, you will soon meet like minded peeps to hang out with.

I have been to Oz twice now, and intend on going back to explore Melbourne, Perth and Tasmania at some point, and I do plan on going to NZ again too. (I was there for two months last time)...it's begging for more exploration.

Only you can decide if the timing is right. I can't imagine you'd hate it at all, unless you're a nervous type. Thumbs Up

Just typed up an advert for my race bike. That's the thing that is a bitch, selling my bloody bikes. Sad But hey, they're only material, and once I come back home, and I'm in work, replaceable, I suppose.

Wouldn't say I'm a nervous type. Laughing

I'd be heading to Perth first (Freo) and then seeing who I meet and where I get to.

Haven't quite decided yet. Can't quite bring myself to post up that advert! Embarassed

Shit hot, I don't have to sell my monster as my parents just offered to buy it off me while I'm gone, so when I get back I can re-buy it off them.

Cool
