They say you're supposed to respect horses on the road because they get scared of loud noises, especially bikes. When you ride past them they always put their hand out making a slow down gesture.

Well, respect works both ways, if they want us to slow down and take it easy around them then they shouldn't be allowed to shit all over the place in the middle of roads.

Where I live, there's always horse shit all over the road and when you're coming round a corner leaning into the bend an there's a huge steaming pile of shit right in your line, what are you suppoed to do?

I almost killed myself a few months ago after doing exactly that and today I have just seen some fella almost lose control of his bike coming round a corner and hitting a pile of shit.

They should be fined for doing that if they get seen letting their horses shit everywhere, in what way is it any different to letting your dog shitting somewhere and you get fined for it?

Rant over but in my eyes, horse riders are cunts and I certainly won't be slowing down for them anymore!

I'll be waiting for a follow up, written from your hospital bed.

Horses are big, heavy, and powerful. Something I want as calm as possible if I have to go anywhere near it.

On a sidenote - a horse rider is 20x more likely to be injured than a motorcyclist - mention that to any family/loved ones next time they moan about how dangerous bikes are! Thumbs Up

I put that part to illustrate my point about them pissing me off but in actual fact, I will still slow down for them as I have friends with horses but it's still annoying how they're allowed to shit on the roads yet a dog owner gets a fine if they let their dog do it? More importantly, the saftey of bikers!

Annoyingly, in London, the only people you see on horses in the roads are mostly Plod, so you kind of HAVE to be careful around 'em Sad

But then, I wouldn't make horse-annoying gestures or noises anyway, cos horses always look like their hooves could kick you off your bike a bit sharpish, damn things Evil or Very Mad

Okay, if you look in any old By Laws you will see that the horse still has many rights on the road.

It's much like the old saying which came first the chicken or the egg, now you might debate that one for hours...but if someone said, 'what came first, the horse or the car/truck/motorcycle?'...I think it will be answered within a second or two. Wink

A few weeks ago I came round a sharp bend near where I live ( not really fast or anything) with the bike lent over and as it was dark I did not see the huge pile of horse crap in the road until the last moment and nearly lost the back end because of it. God knows how I managed to stay on the bike but it did make me think that it is totally crazy that they can get away with it considering the danger it can bring to bikes.

Dont get me wrong I dont have an issue with horses its just what they leave in the road that I dont like.

its not the hooves, its when they turn in blind panic and decide the moving bike doesnt exist and plough through it

suppose I am gonna get jumped on here Rolling Eyes

but having both a horse and a bike I sympathise on both sides, I have nearly been killed on a horse by a bike rider who decided it would be funny to pull wheelies near me.

funny thing is bikes are measured in horse power Rolling Eyes horses were an earlier form of transport than bikes so I believe they have a right to be on the road. and if anyone can train my horse not to poo while he is out? then you are indeed a god.

but the fact I ride bikes I understand its a problem

but then what if you went round a corner and there was a parked car? or a child in the road? you should always ride as if there is something around every corner? although I know we all dont. maybe its worth seeing the bigger picture?

Thats the thing I was ridding round the corner looking for cars etc etc...but was not able to see the poo till the last moment because it was dark and horse poo is dark and also not that big.

Dont get me wrong I used to ride horses and my mates have horses so I know the situation but it does cause problems and someone always has to bring back the horses came first thing but things move on.

They may well have been around since before cars/bikes etc but what has that got to do with anything at all?

Times have changed massively since the days of horse an carts and so has everything else with it.

Horse riders should have to carry a shovel and a bin bag and shovel the shit up just like dog owners have to pick up their dogs turds!

<impatient>
Yes yes we all know about horses have been around for centuries.
And yes yes we all know about horse power.

That doesn't make them superior (apart from if they are Scottish)
It just makes them older.

But you don't have to wear sports bra when going fast on a fuckin bike.

i agree... horse riders cant really take a poop-bag along, itll be a black bag!
and they cant even get off to clear it up,
1. they dont have a shovel
2. if they get off their horse may wander off Laughing

horses are animals, they dont understand the rules of the road.
therefore theres not a great deal that can be done about it. (nappies??)

we have to rely on the decency of horse riders to go back to the spot where the horse pooped and clean it up. but then.. who is going to bother with that?

i pull my clutch in and coast past every horse as not to scare the poor thing and because i dont want to be knocked off.

and i too have slidden on the occasional bit of shit, its incredibly dangerous but at the end of the day.. we chose to be on a bike, we accept the risks.

but i understand your anger. I'd hate to nearly ruin my bike all because of a lazy horse rider. plus i dont want my leathers to smell of shit.

Simple, keep them off the road! Why do they even need to use a road anyway?

If I dropped my bike near where I live on some horse shit, I would go straight to the stables on the road where it's usually all over the place and present them with a bill for the damage.

The comment about "who chose to be on the roads so it's the risk we take" is bollocks. We pay road tax to use safe, maintained roads.

Do horse riders pay road tax? Nope, so get the fuck off my road!

thats true! i didnt think about it that way.

yeah they should, to be able to use the roads. but then they would probably need VIN numbers and reg plates Laughing

I don't really like horses on the road, I also dont like really old people driving on the road, I don't like the chavvy 17 year olds in either tyheir mums car or some clapped out chav wagon on the road, or cyclists etc etc. Thing is that they are there, just the same as potholes are, diesel, gravel, stupid white lines, those yellow rumble strips, speed cameras etc etc.

These are all things that there can't really be anything done about and you just have to live with it. When I get to a horse I will normally slow right down, if its a particularly good looking female rider I might even stop completely and have a gawp. Embarassed

Having said I hate horses on the roads I would be disgusted at anyone going out of their way to make life difficult or dangerous for the rider/beast. In the same way that I dont try and run every granny into a ditch for swerving all over the road and doing 15mph.

I do think that if you want to be all over the roads you should have some liability. I dont know how it would be controlled but why should the fact that something have an engine mean that it has to be scrutinised and over taxed? A horse bolting down the road is a liability to both the driver and any other road user, a knackered cyclist getting blown around in the wind and crossing into traffic is a liability but they need neither insurance nor tax. If you wanted to take a mini moto or pitbike out on the road, even if you could do no more than 10mph you would have to have these things in place. Confused

Little survey to fill out:-

How many of you lot ride a horse to work?

Ride a horse to the shops?

Nobody can seriously answer them yes unless you live in some remote place where nobody give a fuck what you're riding anyway.

Point is, they have no place on the roads anymore, what's even the reason for them being allow on them now?

I don't think if horses and horse riders love to ride on the roads amongst cars and bikes, but I guess sometimes there's no other way to get from A to B.

When I used to ride a horse I really hated going on the roads as it's just not fun. Unfortunately sometimes you have to as there's no nice hidden path available to get to your destination and you don't want to stand in one place.
Yes 'Horses are for fucking hooning around fields and jumping over things' but sometimes you've to get to those fields.

Their shit is rather annoying and dangerous, I've got to agree, but other than that, I don't think if it's that hard to be a little nice to them and not scare the shit out of the horses.

the mother owns a horse. its shit.

i pay £240 ish a year to insure my r6. i pay like £20 a month.
i also spend about £70 a month on fuel.
call it £3 a month on tax, and £10 a month on general bike maintenance bits and bobs.

total: £103ish a month for EVERYTHING to do with my bike.

i do about 210 miles on an average week
works out at about 49p per mile.

the mother pays £2100ish a year to insure her horse (vet bills etc).
the mother pays £70 every month or so to get new shoes for the thing
the mother pays about £50 a month on food for the thing

she rides it about 50 miles a week.
that works out at roughly £6 per mile.

horses are shit, and uneconomical.

Horse box? If you want to ride your motorcross bike to a field, you can't do it legally. You need to trailer it up and drive it there, not attach it to your horse and carriage and thrash it across town like a chariot.

Just saying, I think there's no need for them to be on the road in the first place. Maybe 200 years ago but it's 2009 not 1809.

but isnt it all swings and roundabouts?

who is going to be next under the hammer? the car that hits the rabbit, whose squished bones give you a puncture or make your bike slip? Smile

its a problem yes, but then so is the mud left on the road by a tractor etc etc, we all have issues with stuff what ever hobby we pursue

Horse shit is the least of my worries on the road when compared to the other hazards that are around. If anything, as motorcycle users we have a wee bit in common with people who have horses in that both activities are inherently risky.

Thumbs Up
