Mid Essex to portsmouth avoiding m25 etc

Hi everyone
Posted here as not really touring. Basically on bank holiday weekend going to visit relatives friends and family (surely relatives are family but ok) in Portsmouth/Worthing/Brighton in that order. I want to get to portsmouth and then back from Brighton avioding sitting on M25 for ages as the wife doesnt like going pillion on big roads for long. I guess ll have to use it to cross the river but after that i dont know.

Any suggestions?

I did pretty much the same thing, but going to Essex and from further.

I only had a 125 so it was no motorways at all, using this route IIRC

If you know how to get to Guildford you can from there take the A283 towards Petworth then take the A285 following signs to Chichester/Porstmouth.

cheers, that does look a good return option, does add quiet a bit of distance to my usual 130 ish miles to portsmouth but guess thats inevitable.

TBH once im off the M25 its all reasonable roads from wisley down, I may just come off and find way through as soon as possible after dartford tunnel.

I would personally avoid the A3 altogether, what with all the work they are doing at Hindhead...I would come over the Dartford Bridge (yes it's motorway, but only for a bit), then drop off at junction 5 onto A21, then A26 to Five Ash Down. Then join the lovely A272...through Haywards Heath, Billingshurst, Midhurst to Petersfield, then join the A3 for the last bit to Portsmouth.

Then you will have the privilege of riding along one of the best biking roads in the south of England. It's beautiful and picturesque, and will be good for your pillion too.

Obviously on your way from Portsmouth back to Worthing and Brighton, head along A27 and enjoy Arundel and that road too (best to be on a bike than a car any day).
