Guys,

I just bought a car & the stereo wasn't working as it just wouldn't power on, so today i took the blue wire (just hanging there) & connected it to the battery & the stereo came on, no writing or anything, just a blank blue screen. Does this sound like the stereo is gone or would some wiring cause the the screen to stay blank?

I think this was the remote turn on lead, if so, do i just leave it connected to the battery or would connecting it to the positive on the cig lighter work as well as i obviously want it to come on/off with the ignition.

Cheers. Smile

some of the wiring has been twisted/taped together but it's still connected so i tried wiggling all the wires about but nothing happened.

try swapping the little control panel bit with a freinds, check your speakers work.
if it is just the screen bit not working, should be able to get cheap replacement

So hopefully it is a problem with my stereo as it does seem a bit battered.

Thanks for the help. Thumbs Up

Nope. Kinda looking forward to getting it all working as it came with an Alpine setup, not sure which ones, but should be better then stock.

Btw, about my question for the wiring, would it work if i wire the blue wire to the cig lighter then?

The blue wire is your remote wire. This needs to be connected to the remote live of your cars ignition.

That stereo hasn't been in the car. Its most likely the orginal owner had an aftermarket headunit in.

The remote lead tells the stereo to turn on when your cars ignition is switched on. My stereo wouldn't turn on without that, its just a small 12v current.

You can just connect that wire to the permanant live of the car, but that means you will have to manually switch the radio off everytime you get out of the car. Some people prefer this.

Cheers. I just connected it to the positive on the cig lighter but the stereo stayed on even when the ignition was off. Does the cig lighter always stay on?
May aswell connect it to that as all you need to do is remove the face of the stereo & it's off. Which i'll be doing everytime i leave the car.

Blue wires are almost always a remote switch OUTPUT connection. Goes to the amp or whatever, to tell it to switch on when the headunit is on.

Red is normally a constant 12v INPUT, should be fused then straight to the battery.

Yellow is normally a switched 12v input, live when the ACC position of the ignition is on. Again, I think it's common practise to fuse it too.

I think by shoving 12v into an output you're knackering your choons.
