I'm unbelievably bored.

Babyam a little while ago was asking about her son moving out etc etc..

There's been threads in the past about what to factor in when moving/flying the nest:- I'll make one on what I've found over the last 6 months (as a single occupancy tenant in cheapo council place). I'm not expecting this to be of much of much benefit to anyone in particular but I hope it'll be more helpful than some of the garbage know to have been posted in these hallowed forums.

So;..

Checklist: Thinking (typically most important first)
Deposit
Copy of your contract(I always forget things, don't be forgetting this!)
Rent
Removal(s)/van hire
Food/supplies(bog roll etc)
Furniture
Council Tax
Water
Gas
Electric
TV Licence - Unless you're Hetzer it's better to be having this and conforming with the general consensus of the country than going without. Which they can fine you for at a time when you don't need to be fined Wink

With your Gas/Electric etc, make sure you give the supplier the current reading of when you move in so you're not charged for any previous usage.....

Once you're 'in and established'(helps to meet and greet with the neighbours).. you can start to think about things like your post; people won't know where to send your paper wasting mail.

Inform these people in no particular order:
Bank/Building Society
DVLA - Do this for your licence(s) and your V5's Wink (also, they too can fine you for not updating records IIRC)
Work/Jobcentre
Council - you would not believe how incompetent some can be in never communicating internally
Credit Card/Store Card/Loan Companies
Doctor
Dentist
Optician
All Insurance
Any Mail order things you're with
Inland Revenue etc as applicable
Contract (mobile phone) Provider.
Anything/one you sponsor(like charities) or places you're a member for anything.
Friends - don't want them knocking up the people's of your old gaff
Family - sadly we can't 'lose' some of them, and they will often be offering much needed help during this transition, it's far better to have to much help than not enough.. how you gonna carry that washer and sofa on your own? Razz
Get a list of the area's most useful numbers; this usually includes school's, police stations etc....

Then's your 'luxuries':
Decorating equipment(yes, this includes paint)
Internet/Phone Line/Sky(or whatever)
Light bulbs; don't bank too much on the new place having them
Furnishings; bath mat's, rugs, kitchen utensils, shower bits 'n' bobs, deodorants, pictures, lampshades, even carpet's and laminate flooring/tiles etc etc (surely you get the idea at this point)
Storage, surprisingly you'll seem to have stuff that doesn't 'fit' anywhere right now, so a garage or self storage is something to consider while you settle.
Clothes; Has anyone else realized that some go 'missing' during transit? I swear I had to replace half of my wardrobe(well, the contents not the actual wardrobe - mine's like; walk in Razz).....
Replacements, as said - some things get lost and/or broken; allow for some things to be replaced.
Insurance; contents insurance may seem pointless and surplus to requirements but if your places is robbed or goes up in smoke then this is your bet to being covered and half a chance to start over Karma

Finally for now, there are always things that you forget, or take you by surprise - that's life. I'd recommend you curb and spending habit's or cut back on things you don't need for a month or 3 until you can see how your finances flow... then if you can still afford things carry them on. It's much better to stop things and have spare cash for a while than keep them going while everything's up in the air and not be able to afford them cos you didn't know how much Gas/Lecky or Food actually cost before you sorted it yourself.

Please people, feel free to add or correct me on things. Thumbs Up

Good post...

I cheat a wee bit and still have most of the administrative stuff registered to my Mum's place, vehicle, driving, insurance, all work stuff, banks stuff (although it's mostly on line now...) Only thing I have going to my actual address are things linked directly to it, utility bills, TV, phone etc.

Electoral register is iffy though. It's illegal not to declare yourself (although you can opt to be hidden from public view, but that rarely works.) Again, if you're in the same voting district... I tend to keep registered at my Mum's place.

I like keeping potential agents of despair one step removed, why make it easy for them. Having to employ a tracing agent could be the difference between a creditor being arsed to find you or just writing what ever the debt was off.

Thumbs Up

Also find and join your local Freecycle group as a source for many things like furniture etc, if you can't afford stuff. It's also a great way to get rid of clutter you have that you can't sell. Thumbs Up

It's always worth doing a thorough check of the property and any furnishings when you move in. List any damage, stains, burns etc and get the landlord to sign it. This could save you an immense amount of hassle trying to recover your deposit when you move out.

Mark, you'll have to move out at some point..... big-a-thing as it is, I loved (and still love) it.

I took photo's when I moved in, of every room etc... shows how it was, and I've got photo's of the finished article for comparisons.. Thumbs Up

I hate moving, but then I also dislike getting stuck in one place for too long. Catch 22.

IF, I could find a decent living-in van which kept me warm at night, had WiFi, and a decent hot shower and constant running water, and had a secure unit for my bike, and all equipment was at a good height (I really dislike caravans which cater for vertically challenged people only) AND I had somewhere secure to park without fear of having wheels removed, being treated like a pikey, and suffering abuse, then it would be perfect for me. Thumbs Up

Fuck the TV license as BBC iPlayer, ITV Catchup, 4oD, and Demand 5 mean you can watch everything anyway. Just ignore all their threatening letters cos they mean nothing.

Royal Fail and their redirection service is unreliable IME therefore pretty pointless. As long as you change your address for anything/everything important, no redirection service means some poor sucker will be getting your junk mail. Razz

It's all pretty straight forward really. Mr. Green

Aye just write 'no longer at this address' on them and pop 'em back in't post box. Thumbs Up

It's all easy except because it's something to do over a couple of weeks, you forget many of them and they bite you in the ass abit later. Only now (6 months on), am I getting Sky etc installed. Because I'm lazy so kept forgetting.

Most stuff is done through Direct Debit, and watching online isn't excusing you from paying the licence fee, I'm just 'happy' paying it because it's the done thing. I'm not asking for a hetzer stylee lecture here, It's my choice & I'm sticking by it. Wink
