I was taken to one side today by someone who insisted on bragging about how good a rider he was and how fast he can take bends even though he has been riding two minutes realatively speaking, and I immediately thought of this site Wink So for those of you who think you are gods gift to riding, here is a little poser which some of you might know the answer to, in which case keep quiet so the others can fight it out amongst themselves Very Happy Wink

You are out on the bike riding along a lovely section of road for the very first time.

You are riding in a national speed limit (60). You approach a bend which you have never ridden before. The road surface is good, the weather is fine and clear and traffic flow is light. You decide to take the bend at 30 MPH. You come out the other side safely and realise that you could have gone quicker, so being a lovely section of road, you turn around and go back and ride it again. This time you ride the same bend at 40. It is still safe and legal and it still feels comfortable, so you do it again at 50 and again at 60.

On each and every occasion you have ridden the bend it has been comfortable, safe and legal, but what is the correct speed for the bend? 30? 40? 50? or 60?

Not a trick question I assure you, answers on a postcard.

assuming it's your first time through the bend then the first speed you felt comfortable to take it is "correct" for you at that time.

your question is very open though, so many variables can be added it's not even funny.

The variables don't even come into the equation if you know the answer! Rolling Eyes

It's as quick as as far as you can see.

I.e If you are travelling at 60 and you need 50meters to stop, I would want to be seeing 50 meters in front of me. If I couldn't I would slow down.

That's how it should be anyway...

makes sense but it doesn't mean that there is a "correct" speed for the corner. Correct is the wrong word anyway, it should be "safe"..

the word "correct" is also very open.

Surely the variables are what guide you to the answer.

The OP has already said it was Safe. So by definition all the variables have been taken care of - otherwise it would have been unsafe Very Happy

The answer is 9

i.e
30 + 30 + 30 = 90 = 9 + 0 = 9

40 + 50 = 90 = 9+0 =9

30 + 60 =90 = 9 + 0 = 9

60 + 60 + 60 = 180 = 1 + 8 + 0 = 9

Spooky!!!!! Karma

any speed? is that what you're saying? this thread makes no sense. utter fail.

oh and there's plenty more variables other than what was mentioned to deem the road "safe"

Funny, I felt I almost grasped the true meaning of autism. Razz

That was a crap question btw, as it was all about wording not riding.

Again, pants! variables are variable by nature. Traffic flowing at different speeds will influence your speed. You did mention traffic being light flow but that has nothing to do with how close/far the traffic in front is..

If everything is "safe" and you feel "safe" and you want to go as fast as you legally can then 60 would be the speed you would do as long as you weren't accelerating up someone's hole, doesn't mean it's the correct speed or incorrect speed.

The question is too open.

Why don't you tell us the answer then?

p.s. I don't think I'm a great rider, I just think it's a shit question.

There is NO correct or legal speed for the bend....

The only safe one, is the one where you exit the bend on 2 wheels (shinny side up) continuing your journey Thumbs Up to enjoy the next bend. Karma

Surely all the speeds are correct to take the bend - for each time you go round it.

So 30 was correct the 1st time, 40 the 2nd time etc etc.

You are building your knowledge each time you negotiate the bend.

Bends are very dangerous. I always stop just before the bend, get off and push it round carefully.

I have never fallen off doing it this way, although my hernia is horrible to look at after a few hundred miles of twisties.

As long as each time you felt comfortable, were safe and legal.

It would differ from person to person, therefore you couldnt say there was a 'correct speed' for the bend, ONLY that there was a correct speed for the person riding around it.

I'm obviously not a good rider. In the scenario given by the OP I wouldn't have gone back to do the corner again. I'd have been happy I got round it safe first time and carried on my way, making a mental note that next time I happen to be on that road I can push it a bit harder around that bend. I get my kicks from going places, not getting obsessed with every corner and the absolute maximum speed I can do around it.

But then I have less than 3,000 miles under my belt on 2 wheels and I'm still learning. Maybe it's a seasoned biker thing.

Cheers all

Drew
