Hi all

Thought I would introduce myself. I started biking in Jan 09 at the age of 40. My Mrs passed her car test so I lost the cage. I just passed my A2 last week so I am trading in my trusty 05 Varadero 125 for this:

https://img264.imageshack.us/img264/4281/fazer.th.jpg

1999 FZS600 Fazer, 23k, Restricted to 33bhp and in very lovely condition if I do say so.

I pick it up on Thursday and I am exited but a bit nervous as well.

Welcome to BCF mate.

Congratulations on the pass fella, thats a lovely looking bike you have there. The nervousness will disappear very quickly into your first ride, just take it easy on the cruddy roads at the moment Thumbs Up

grats Smile

out of interest.. if you're 40 years old why did you do an A2 licence and not just a full one?

i understand you may have wanted to do the test on your own bike but for a few beans for the hire of a schools 500 i just cant reason why someone wouldnt just do the full test and be done with it

hi there - I passed my A2 a week before my 41st birthday. I started out on a varadero commuting every day. I had a couple of weeks off work after an op and decided to do my highway code test and module 1 whilst I was twiddling my thumbs. I then bagged a module 2 cancellation a few days later. I originally intended to use the dero forever and just retake the cbt every two years, I kind of passed my A2 "by accident". I travelled from Hull to Southampton to pick up my first "proper" bike - the Fazer - my first trip on her took six hours - 250 miles butI loved every yard!! Only thing now is I really wish I'd gone for the full big boys test. I love my Fazer - mines had a few very subtle tweaks that I reckon make a noticeable diference (but then I'm biased).

33bhp is fun but an extra 60 would be lovely...........

I think I would have been mortified when I took my test (back in olden times Laughing ) if I'd been restricted. Even though the first bike I had after passing my test was a Superdream 250 Shocked But with hindsight I think it's a good idea to have a couple of years on a 33hp bike. Going from a small bike straight to something powerful often ends in tears.

ha, ha - I'm the same - my cars been practically stationary since may - thing is the cars been sulking and started draining the battery almost overnight so starting it is now a nightmare.......
I promised my financial director that i'd be back in the car over winter - thing is I've actually been looking for a cheap winter hack instead - old cg125 or cb250 methinks

fazer now not so shiny after binning it on icy road.

Broken hand means cage time for a month or two

financial director appears to have proved a point

sorry to hear about your off. Sadly the shiny Fazer I posted at the top of the thread is binned as well. I was rear ended by a distracted mercedes 7 hours after I collected her so I only had my grin for a few hours!

Third party admitted full liability as did her insurers in writing the next day. fazer is write off Sad

I am a bit bruised but otherwise ok.

Just picked up this on Sunday - 33bhp again but bags of fun! 03 Hornet S

So which do you prefer the Fazer or the Hornet?

Difficult to say really - only had the fazer for 7 hours before it was totalled and I'm still getting used to the big bikes in general.

Prefer the riding position on the hornet - and it's a lot more forgiving of my shonky gear changes, the hornet also feels revvier - in second and third it's really champing at the bit to get away so I need to be very very light with the right hand in town.

had a good ride out on Sunday morning on the Hornet - Rugby to Coventry via A45 then back alonng the B roads.

Passed my A2 4 days ago, by the way it was my Birthday the day before and i was 38. Guess this is the middle aged club.

Currently have a Yam Xt125x looking to upgrade as soon as possible. Was interested in a restricted Fazer, not sure really, seems so many to choose from

Here's my thoughts:

Fazer:

Pro's
Nice solid bike my '99 also looked nice and retro with the twin headlight fairing - very star wars
Easy to drive - comfortable sitty-uppy riding position
Good wind protection
Good controls - easy to use

Cons
Indicator switch flimsy
headlights terrible - if no streetlights downright scary

Hornet:

Pro's
Also solid and well built
Fairing gives decent protection
All controls good - easy to reach
Smooth gearing
Easy to drive - comfortable
Good space under seat (scottoiler, toolkit, bungees etc)
excellent headlights - I mean really really good!
Much easier to u turn than the vara (lower weight?)

Cons
Bit vibraty at 4k but just "buzzy"
Meagre 17 litre tank (vara has 21) - 100 miles (ish) depending on how you drive

All in all - very similar. Honda feels better built and looks like it will weather the winter better

bathtub
very eager in 1st and 2nd - really need to watch the right hand

Me too, passed two weeks afore my 41st after a DAS scheme (i give myself the best birthday presents). I was nervous when I bought my first big bike, and am still super cautious, but its great. Been commuting on my ZX6R J1 for a few weeks now, and really really like it. The only thing I miss is radio 4. And talking to mysef in the car.

Thanks Bathtub, really got a few things to think about.

Was keen on the Fazer but from what you say seems the Hornet maybe the better. Had a Honda before my current Yam, i know what you mean about quality, the Honda always felt very solid. You do however tend to pay for that.

Cheers
