im having trouble with the charging system on my nc29. ive checked the voltage from the alternator and that was fine, ive bought a new reg/rec, the heat syncd one, and a new battery, but it still goes flat. i just cant get my head round it, does anyone have any ideas? ive checked the loom and i cant realy find anything out of place, apart from on the fuel cut off relay, someone at some point has disconnected it and in the connector put either fuse wire or what looks like half a paper clip across two of the connections to bypass it. personaly i found that rather strange. any ideas would be very greatfull. cheers folks.

What do your charging voltages look like? Any current loss through the loom when the ignition is off?

i dont think anything is earthing badly, because it hasnt really blown any fuses, apart from the fuse to the rad fan because the rad fan sensor connection on the rad snapped of, because it was corroded, i havent found a replacement yet but i dout it is, because this bike has hada persistent charging problems since ive had it.

Here's an idea you might want to try...

1. Take the battery off the bike and measure the current drain.
2. Battery back on, measure current drain with the ignition off. If it's massively different you have a leak to earth somewhere.
3. Pull all the fuses out (except the main one) and see if it changes.
4. If it does, the leak is between the battery and the fuse box, if not, then replace each fuse one at a time and try to isolate the problem.

Its a PITA but it'll give you half a clue as to where to start looking.

Thumbs Up

Does the NC29 use the weird low wattage Honda bulbs that everyone replaces with normal H4's that screws the charging system?

How corroded is the starter relay?

Have you bothered checking the charge rate at the battery while the bikes running?

ght, well ive spent some time tinkering. the battery is reading fine - 12.6-8 volts. there is no current drain with the igntion off. ive tested all the fuses with the ignition on, and the only one drawing power is the fuse for the lights on the intrument cluster ie neutral light, side stand light ect. they are drawing 0.5 amps. which is imagine is fine. the fuel cut off realy has been bypassed at some pint so it is on a continual feed , which i think someone has done because the relay has fail. but it is not draining the power. ive tested the headlights with the ignition off, and with the engine running but they are not drawing a massive amount. when you rev the engine, the lights do not get brighter. so i tested the regulated output and ive got nothing. but its a brand new regulator because the old one had failed, the battery is brand new aswell as the old one was buggerd. ive tested the alternator for resitance, and for voltage from the center yellow wire that goes into the reg/rec connector block. with the + on the center yellow wire then the - ont the left and right wires in turn. the resistance of the coil is 0.7 ohms on both wires, and the voltage from both wires is 1.4 volts AC.

Hi

Don't have figures for the NC29, but that voltage from the alternator sounds WAY too low. I would expect around 50V ac from it.

All the best

Keith

thats what i was thinking keith, i would of thought it would be around 50 to 70 volts AC. maybe my stator coil is fubard then you think?

i

Possibly, or the magnets on the rotor have come off.

The resistance over the ones you have checked sounds OK, but think they should be the same whichever pair of yellow wires you choose (ie, try the other 2).

All the best

Keith

yeah i did and the resistance is fine, im not familiar with the alrernator on this machine yet but i will see. i can remeber on my old 1994 rs 125 extrema, that thing used to smash its magnets with the starter bendix. i think those alternator rotors on the old rotax 123 engines were a poor design anyway because the roll pins always used to pop out that held the teeth on the engaged with the starter bendix. anyways. i went off on a bit off a tangent there. the good news is i have atcualy got another engine. the top end is useless but the bottom end has a brand new re-shelled crank on it, ive stripped the parts i was off it like the clutch and such like, so i will dig out the stator coil and rotor and try those me thinks. Smile
