Usual Honda stuff, check for a cam chain rattle at faster than idle. They all rattle a bit at idle. The worst it will be is a cam chain tensioner, which are cheap to buy.

Check that the subframe is straight as well as the clock bracket. Check for scrapes on the engine cases, and check behind the pegs on the swinging arm for scuffs. If its been crashed it will have scuffs there.

I had a 954 and it was a good bike but it was too good for me. Too fast, too twitchy and too mental. Bear this in mind if you test ride it. Think to yourself "Can I live with this bike on a day to day basis?" If you think you can, then go for it. Don't be afraid to choose something else if the bike isn't right for you. If you like it, then go for it. They are cracking value at the moment and they are solidly built. The only real issue as mentioned is the camchain tensioner, and issues arising from a crash.

Also check the tyres carefully and make sure you're happy with the make and model. I didn't like the BT014's on my blade.

Good luck.

Marjay is right about the swinging arm, there is a 'Y' shaped weld on the swinging arm, the pegs impct there in a small to medium drop, right in the middle of the Y (which is lying on it's side). The swinging arm should be flat at that point. Also check round the back end of the engine cases for ugly welding, the swingarm bolts direct to the engine cases and can stress them in a big off.

Also check the reg/rec is working (does the headlight get brighter when you rev it), Honda still can't make one reliably.

Apart from that, they are fairly heavy on brake pads and the low down fuelling is crap, so you might want to budget for a power commander. The 954 fuelling was much improved.

Cracking bikes though, if a little small for a fat git like me, which was why I sold mine.

Cheers

Cheers for the info, this is the stuff i was looking for, things that only owners would really notice. Will check it all out.

Hopefully the bike will be for me, will just have to see how it goes. I can hardly pass up the chance for this bike though.

Its local, is apparently in showroom condition (havent seen it though) 12k ish miles, just mot'd and tax'd for only 1500 (I hope).

Hopefully will have a chance to look at it either today or tommorow. We shall see..

Cheers, Nick

That sounds suspiciously cheap. I'd be expecting more in the region of £2k-2.5k.

Its not off of Gumtree is it?

That is very cheap, the 918 Blades are still making more than that, be very wary and take a mate who knows his bikes to act as devil's advocate in case you get shiny bike syndrome.

Cheers

No not gumtree, someone that i know. I too would be very suprised if i got it for that, but its worth a punt. He mentioned it quite a while ago, so not sure where i stand untill I next see him.

Will keep the thread updated after i go see/buy it.

I also think hes one of these people who doesn't want to see it going to a bad home, kinda thing. As technically he said he isnt actually selling it, but if someone he knows comes along and gave him 1500 for it (it isnt used much since the birth of his son) then he would be happy. That was the impression i got.

As echoed by everybody here, camchain rattle from cold is typical of the bike. It will go away once warmed up.

Never had any problems in the 5k miles I've had the bike and its easy enough to do basic servicing on your own.

1500 quid is way too cheap for any 929 especially if it's in showroom condition; expect 2.5k.

Power commander does a good job of masking the low speed 1st gear fuelling glitches which make it a bit of a pig in town, but on the open roads, it's a joy!

As I said before, you can smuggle madeline mc cann back from portugal in the underseat storage. The bike's pretty agile, hence sports touring tyres will suffice for most users. I've got Roadsmarts on mine and will happily stick with the fast boys in the midlands.

Build quaility overall is very good. The swingarm itself is a work of art, so any scuffs marks, nicks is an indication of an off.

Make sure you put crash bungs on yours which bolt directly onto the engine mounting brackets... saved the fairing and engine casings on a low speed off at Baker Street Embarassed

Other than that, can't think of anything bad to say about the bike. You can also ask Steph who just got one about her opinion on the 929.
