cant decide what type of bike to get can anyone help please

hi everyone

recently joined BCF

a little bit about me first i am 16 just finished my gcses and walked away with 6 A-C as a reward my god mom is giving me £500 i am 17 in november and i am waiting till then to do my CBT because i want to do it on a 125 i am nearly 6ft and i am wondering what bike to get???

Ive been told to get a trial bike that is road legal but i dont know much about them

i want a 4 stroke bike

ive been looking on ebay for a few months and two dddifferent typeshave caught my eye the first was an yamaha YBR and the second was a yamaha SR

i was wondering if any one has had any experience with these bikes and would please share their knowledge

and i was also if people could recommend other 4 stroke 125s please

Well, you have two options really. A new bike that will inevitably be Chinese, or a second hand bike which will probably be 10 years old or more, but hopefully in good condition.

My first bike was a brand new 125cc 4 stroke Chinese bike for £500.... but it only lasted 9 months. Search these forums and you'll find many, many horror stories of such bikes, but they might be a cheap way to start.

A second hand bike is probably the better way to go though. I would recommend an old CG, but that's just me. If you can save any more than £500 at all it would be a huge bonus.

i really want to stay away from Chinese bikes as ive heard the stories

Do your CBT now and use one of their bikes, it does you for 2 years and you can ride ANYTHING 125cc or less (50cc till you're 17)

So it doesn't matter if you take it on a ped, you can still ride a 125 without having to re-sit

I bought a CG125 for £400, which is in your price range.

They are pretty cheap and really... REALLY reliable.

It's kind of like the YBR, but not as modern-looking.

I have one, not too shabby for the price and for a learner bike, it'll take a beating.

From experience, and dunc will probably agree, parts for the CG are incredibly easy to get a hold of, and normally for pretty cheap

I've heard that the majority of CBT's will have CG's there for you to use as well, so you should get to know what one feels like if you do the CBT first anyway.

Hey Ethan, congratz on your Results i got mine a few weeks back too..

Agreed with these guys, Honda CG is the way to go, should be able to find one in your price range. Heard a story of someone putting custard instead of oil in the engine, it ran for 40 minutes before it popped its clogs.. not entirely sure if its true though

I went for one got a week and a bit till i can ride it

I have now seen a honda CG 125 i want which is brilliant news hopefully i will get it i will keep you posted

if i do get it i have got two wonderful months to clean it to perfection before i can ride it

It's most likely that it is but there's no way of knowing for sure based just on the year. Is there a description or pictures of the bike?

Also, it doesn't harm to view a bike before you buy it, hear the engine running and make sure that all of the paper work is in order. If at all possible, get someone knowledgeable to come with you, sometimes the smallest things can turn in to painful issues later on, which of course can always be fixed, just at your inconvenience. Finally, bear in mind that £500 might be worth that inconvenience if it gets you on the road in the short term and might be a fun project to fix / learn about bikes in the long run.

For sale, my wifes Honda CG125, this bike was purchased to get her through her test. She has passed and is moving onwards, the bike is 12yrs old and has done just under 1800miles with its present owner, easy starter and great mpg, it is a ideal learner or commuting bike.
The bike is in good condition with the exception of a small dent in the tank( was there when we purchased it) I'm sure there is more i should put, but it is what it is, good condition, good runner and good value,


so what do you think ??

Mileage is pretty low so I'd say you're probably on to a good thing it's only done ~1300 miles a year!

Edit: wow, now I feel guilty. The speedo and hence my odometer is broken on my CG... need to get that fixed before too long

and oh dear about your odometer your not selling it though so it doesnt really need to be fixed that badly does it ??

I'm not selling it no, but a couple hundred miles will have gone missing somewhere all I need is a speedo cable I think, well I hope, otherwise new dials cost more.

For comparison, my bike is 2004 and has more than 17000 miles on it even though it's 7 years newer than the one you're bidding on they take punishment pretty well.

Remember there are plenty of bikes out there, dont get pulled into a bidding war and end up paying more than you wanted
Set yourself a limit and stick to it

It is easy to get into the mind set of "it is only £50, i`ll go to £550"
Next you know you have paid £750 for it.

When i got it it had done 43000 miles, so that one aint too shabby
