Another Honda 400 with charging issues. Seems to be coming a regular occurance.
Before you rip everything to bits, you can do some standard checks that just require the use of a multimeter.
1. measure the voltage across the battery with it off - it should be about 12.5-13v.
2. With the bike at idle (choke off), it should be about 13.5v
3. 3000-7000rpm it should go up to about 14.5-15v.
If you don't get these values...
Grab a haynes as they have all the values you need to find.
Check the resistance of the stator coil by sticking your multimeter pins in the connector block of the reg/rec. Check that they are within the range stated by haynes. You should also turn the engine over once or twice and check the value changes as the stator moves.
Next, test the reg/rec across its diodes using the little table and that you haven't got continuity where you shouldn't have using the bleep test.
If all that's ok, then in theory the charging circuit is working, now you just need to check you've got continuity from the battery to the reg/rec's output.
